Researchers have always been looking for alien forms of life, and now they think that Jupiter’s moon, Europa, could be their home. Recent information from NASA shows that water ejections resembling geysers were spotted on Europa. This leads scientists to believe that under the icy surface lies an ocean which can sustain life.
NASA researchers got the new information on Europa’s liquid water with the help of a Hubble Space Telescope. They believe that the geyser-like formations are due to the existence of a deeply hidden ocean. On the other hand, one of the first implications that spring to one’s mind it that the existence of water could sustain alien forms of life.
According to the specialists’ measurements, Europa’s ocean could be even one hundred kilometers deep. This is way deeper than any ocean or structure on Earth. In addition to this, there is also evidence which points out that the ocean might also be extremely salty.
Experts at NASA relate the salinity of Europa’s alleged ocean to the salt formations at the surface of the moon. The deposits might be formed by the plumes of water which erupt from the deep ocean. This leads scientists to believe that there are salt deposits on the ocean’s floor too.
Specialists also explain that salinity might be a significant clue of alien forms of life on Europa. However, in order to check the information, further research and investigations are needed. The water plumes of Europa must be tested for chemical composition and other features.
NASA is preparing a new mission to explore Jupiter’s moon. The launch of the spacecraft called Europa Clipper is scheduled for 2020 and it is meant to solve the mystery of the underground ocean on Europa. If there are forms of alien life on Jupiter’s moon, then the probe will also gather evidence on that. However, the year of the launching is not set in stone, so scientists might wait for more than four years to have accurate information on Europa.
Jupiter is the largest planet in our Solar system, and it has many moons. Europa is just one of them. Callisto and Ganymede are other two similar celestial bodies which could also host oceans. However, no datum from these two moons shows that they may also host alien life. This is why the discovery of Europa’s oceans, with all of its features, is highly important for scientists.
