Ettore Majorana released a theory in 1937 according to which quantum physics is also governed by a fermion that exists as its own antiparticle at the same time. However, the world of science needed 80 years to confirm such a presence. The particle got the name of Majorana fermion after its discoverer. However, the new team of scientists suggested calling it as the angel particle.
The Angel Particle Remained a Theory for 80 Years until Today
At the beginning of the universe, the Big Bang started its genesis out of nothing. Through their work, scientists found that the massive explosion generated both matter and anti-matter. On top of that, their amounts were equal. However, these elements were so powerful and reactive to each other that in case they meet they would eliminate each other. Therefore, they would recreate the nothingness through a burst of energy.
In 1937, an Italian physicist, Ettore Majorana, created a famous theory that supports the existence of an entirely new class of particles. These are fermions and their odd property of being both particles and anti-particles.
After 80 years since this theory, a team of scientists at the University of California and Stanford University reported that they finally discovered signs of the existence of such an element. Their paper was published in journal Science. Researchers chose to call their finding as for the Angel Particle. This is a reference to author Dan Brown’s thriller Angels and Demons. In this book, the villain steals the most powerful bomb on Earth which is a mix of matter and anti-matter.
Professor Shoucheng Zhang is the lead author of the experiment. They used a quasiparticles strategy through two quantum material films. The top one represented a superconductor and the second one was a topological insulator.
The Discovery Could Make Quantum Computers Stable
Their combination forced electrons to zip on the surface with zero resistance. One edge had electrons fleeing in one direction while the other edge had electrons move in a different one. With the help of a magnet, scientists discovered the already famous subatomic particle.
There are not yet any practical applications for such a discovery. However, the authors of the experiment hope their work would revolutionize quantum computers. Thanks to their new particle, such progressive equipment could function properly even in the presence of environmental noise.
