Aurora theater mass murderer James Holmes (pictured) was transferred to another prison after being assaulted by an inmate.
James Holmes, 28, the mass shooter who killed 12 people and injured 70 more at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, reportedly got attacked by another inmate in the state penitentiary where he was serving his life in prison sentence without parole.
In the wake of the incident, the mass killer was transferred to an out of state prison. Prison officials declined to provide more info on the exact location as they fear for the gunman’s safety.
In February, Colorado Prisons Director told reporters that guards were very careful in not letting Holmes come in contact with other inmates. But when a guard opened a sliding gate, Mark Daniels, a notorious car thief, jumped on Holmes. It took several guards to pull the two apart.
The officer who was taking Holmes back to his cell after a brief visit to his case manager was not able to communicate with the officer responsible for the sliding gate since his battery went dead.
According to the officers’ report, Daniels squeezed through the gate, got close enough to Holmes and started punching him with his bare fist in and around the head, while nearby guards were yelling “No. Don’t do it.”
The report shows that the shooter was hit at least two times before officers could intervene and put the other offender to the ground. Daniels was so enraged that he punched a female officer in the face as well while she was trying to get him off Holmes.
Later, the car thief said that he was sorry that he couldn’t hit the mass murderer harder when he had the occasion.
“I’m so sorry I couldn’t wipe him out and sent [sic] him packing to Satan’s lake of fire,”
he added.
Daniels was convicted for stealing several cars, forgery and menacing. He hasn’t any violent crimes on his record. But he said that he punched Holmes six or seven time before officers reacted. He was disappointed by the officers’ quick intervention.
The prisons director told reporters that his officers did not violate any procedures in the incident. So, no one had to be disciplined.
Holmes had been housed in the maximum security state prison for over a month when the assault occurred. Prison staffers hadn’t reached a conclusion on whether to keep him separated from other offenders permanently. In the meantime, he had been held alone in a cell, while prison management were pondering on the best solution.
