Local authorities from Maryland declared that a woman was attacked and mauled by a black bear. Cataloging this incident as being a rare occurrence, especially in the state of Maryland, the Wildlife authorities added that the black bear responsible for the incident was tracked down and euthanized.
According to the Maryland Natural Resources Police, the agency which handled the case, the black bear attacked the woman because it was trying to protect its cubs. Fortunately, the woman survived the attack and is now at the hospital where she’s receiving treatment for her wounds.
Candy Thompson, the agency’s spokesperson, declared that this is indeed a rare incident. In fact, according to Thompson, there hasn’t been a black bear related attack in Maryland for over thirty years.
It would seem that the incident occurrent at around 9:00 pm, on Wednesday, near Irongate Lake, heavily wooded area. Karen Osborne, the victim of the attacks, lives next door to her children.
According to the interview conducted by the police, sometimes after 9 o’clock in the evening, Osborne heard her children’s dog barking loudly. She got out of her house, put her dog on the leash, and went over to see why the dog was barking so loud.
Shortly after that, the woman was mauled by a black bear which, according to the authorities, attacked her at least four times and from three different directions. Fortunately, the woman kept her wits about her and used her cell phone to dial the emergency numbers.
The woman was immediately rushed to the Hagerstown hospital where the doctors tended to her wounds. Osborne’s physicians said that the woman had a broken arm, several cuts on her legs and head, and puncture marks on her arms.
When the woman was found, she was lying in a pool of blood in a fetal position, the authorities added.
The local wildlife service has a theory that can explain this incident. During their search of the area, wildlife experts found a bear cub stranded in one of the trees. It’s possible that the black bear got separated from her cubs when the dogs began to bark.
The mother attempted to round up her cubs when Osborne and her dog showed up. Thompson added that the poor woman who was mauled by the black bear was simply in the wrong place, at the wrong time.
