Seven homes have already been evacuated and people were told to seek refuge in the casino. At 7.45 pm on Wednesday, the fire department had managed to contain about ten percent of it but the fire managed to spread to about 50 acres in the area, according to Cal Fire Captain Kendal Bortisser.
Officials reported that this was the greatest fire recorded this year in San Diego, even if more than 2,000 fires have occurred within the last six months and destroyed more than 7,500 acres of land.
According to Capt. Bortisser, the people living in the area are already accustomed with this type of wildfire: “I have not met with any of the folks that live in the area so I don’t know what their demeanor is. But I can imagine that since we live with wildfire year-round in San Diego County, I’m sure folks throughout the area are on edge as a result of the fire.”
The average number of fires over the last five years was 1,461 and the average number of acres affected was 12,336.
This particular fire was reported to be great enough to spread to 500 acres. However, officials from the fire department have worked hard to maintain it burning at just 50 acres so far. They are working both from the ground and from the air, with helicopters to try to contain the flames.
The authorities reported that four air tankers and five helicopters were sent in the area to help the hundreds of firefighters from the United States Forest Service, the Barona reservation and other fire departments, who are trying to put out the fire.
Because the blaze is threatening to spread further, Wildcat Canyon Road has been closed a long way, starting from San Vicente Road to Founders Way.
By 9 pm, it was reported that the speed at which the fire spread slowed down due to the humidity present in the area.
What was more worrying was that establishments were threatened to turn ablaze in the area. Many people have been evacuated, but they feared they might be losing their homes. Some of these threats were lifted but the firefighters are still on the lookout.
A cause for the fire was not established yet by the authorities.
