Update on the explosive package incident which occurred on the morning of the 22nd of November. ATF and Center City PD investigations have revealed that that the packaged was target specific and not a terrorist attack as they initially thought.
Richard Ross, Philadelphia’s Police Commissionaire, declared that the package which exploded in Center City, Philadelphia was intended for a single person. During this incident, a 62-year old male was injured and rushed to the local hospital where he received treatment.
Here’s what the investigation revealed so far. The senior citizen, whose identity was not revealed by the Police, received a package wrapped in a manila envelope, at around 5 pm on Monday.
According to the man’s roommate, after receiving the package, the senior citizen deposited it in the kitchen. In addition, it would seem that the man received packages containing medicine on a regular basis, so the manila envelope rose no suspicion at that time.
The sealed package remained in the kitchen for the rest of the day. On Tuesday morning, at around 4 pm, the man decided to open the package, thinking it contained the inhalers he order.
After the senior citizen had cut open the carefully-wrapped envelope, the package blew up, injuring the man’s chest and hands. In addition, according to the authorities who arrived shortly on the scene, the blast from the explosion also affected the oven area.
Right after the authorities picked up the wounded senior citizen from his devastate home, they’ve evacuated a 10-block area as a precaution. The evacuated residents were forced to spend a couple of hours outside before the ATF, Police Department, and bomb disposal teams declared the area safe.
The preliminary tests performed on the package received by the man revealed that it contained a home-made explosive device. However, the authorities are having trouble tracing back the explosive package since the manila envelope bears no addresses and no stamp.
In addition, the authorities believe that the package might have been delivered via a courier. What’s even more baffling is the fact that the senior citizen does not have any enemies, and there were no threats prior to the bombing.
Moreover, it would seem that the device was specifically created as to target a single person, judging by the blast radius and by the damage seen in the man’s kitchen.
