Thanks to a new physics experiment, scientists have discovered the clearest evidence of a particle that should not exist. The so-called sterile neutrinos are mysterious particles that do not interact with the matter while passing through it. It’s interesting that the first clues regarding these bizarre particles actually appeared decades ago. But since then, experts have struggled to find more evidence regarding their existence, as many experiments contradicted the results of those older ones. Recently, two new experiments have demonstrated the existence of sterile neutrinos, while others have kept turning out results that contradict this.
The reason for this might be a strange phenomenon in the universe that is making our most advanced experiments contradict each other. It all began back in the 1990s, when the Liquid Scintillator Neutrino Detector discovered evidence of a new strange particle, the sterile neutrino. This particle supposedly passes through matter without interacting with it in any way. But when the result of this experiment couldn’t be replicated, the matter was set aside. NO other experiment was able to find any trace of this unusual particle. So, does it really exist? It does, according to a new study which the preprint server arXiv recently published.
The mysterious case of the sterile neutrinos
The new data from MiniBooNE confirms that this tension in the data is real. This data can (to my best knowledge) NOT be fitted with the standard framework. It requires either new particles (sterile neutrinos) or some kind of symmetry violation. 4/6

The paper refers to MiniBooNE, a new experiment which experts conducted at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, near Chicago. This experiment has managed to pick up a trace of this unusual particle once more. It’s worth noting that the Standard Model of Physics has been the most important guide when it comes to scientists and their understanding of the universe.
It contains an entire list of particles which explain how energy and matter interact with each other in the universe. Now, these new sterile neutrinos have completely changed this understanding. Especially because things are not that clear regarding this bizarre matter.
