It’s never actually been comfortable to ride in low cost jets, but face-to-face airplane seats could make economy class absolutely unbearable.
Every time you choose to buy low cost tickets you are faced with the possibility of getting the dreaded middle seat in the row. Depending on the length of the flight, you might actually arrive at your destination with an acute phase of claustrophobia, agoraphobia or some sort of anxiety disorder, because it is extremely uncomfortable to stay trapped between two people and a row of seats that is close enough for you to have to keep your legs crouched for the entire duration of the flight.
If you thought this was bad, well, there is a chance that it will get much worse in the near future, because airline companies are looking for new inventive ways to essentially cram up more people into their jets. And they hope to achieve this task by introducing a new type of seat arrangement that includes face to face seats, which is essentially any passenger’s nightmare.
Technically, their idea makes a lot of sense, as a significant amount of space could be gained by assigning passengers to sit face to face, one next to the other. Therefore, the number of seats that can be included in one row could be increased to at least four, which will make the flight more cost-effective.
However, this implies that the journey will become even more difficult to bear, because passengers will be forced to make eye contact with their neighbors, regardless of their seats. Every seat will come with two pairs or eyes directed at its occupant, which is bound to make eating and sleeping even more uncomfortable than they were beforehand.
Yet another negative aspect would be that about half of the passengers would have to ride while facing the opposite direction of that of the plane’s. And this makes take-offs and landings sound like absolute torture. Having a strong stomach will be absolutely mandatory for those who will want to ride in economy class in the event that this seat arrangement plan makes it to the development stage.
This new seat arrangement is only in project phase at the moment. It is called a hexagon design and it has been patented by Zodiac Seats France. It remains unknown whether or not this project will actually be put to use in the future. For the sake of all economy class passengers out there, the hexagon design should never be materialized, as it could make low cost flying living hell.
