“Pika, pika-pi” – Danny DeVito 2016
Even if the idea that Great Detective Pikachu should be voiced by Danny DeVito if the new mistery-themed 3DS ever comes to NA might seem weird, once you think about it, it actually makes sense. In the trailer released for Japan, the lovely yellow Pokemon has the voiced of a rugged Japanese man, somehow pulling away the fun of the game.
The game itself is a spin-off Pokemon game starring the franchise’s famed mascot, Pikachu. Even if the little creature usually talks by saying Pika Pika all the time, the concept behind talking Pokemon is not that weird, given the fact that Meowth can speak perfectly.
Plus, a detective mystery game where the main character can only say one word is somewhat unexciting, even if the idea is hilarious. One can just imagine a Game of Thrones Sherlock Holmes-styled spinoff with Hodor as Sherlock and Bran Stark as Watson.
Even if Danny DeVito is an incredible actor who played a multitude of roles throughout his long career, either in dramas or comedy movies, Nintendo US will most likely not opt to have him as the voice of Pikachu. A petition has already started in order to push this idea even further, and even a fan-made trailer of the game starring Pikachu DeVito has surfaced on YouTube.
If you think that the two characters don’t necessarily match, just watch the trailer and you might have a change of heart. Although DeVito might not accept this role, other characters could easily fit the shoes of the Great Detective Pikachu as well. If the story of the game took place in Little Italy or had something to do with the Italian mob, Joe Pesci would have been perfect for that role.
Because the game is a spin-off, one would expect it to be more lighthearted in comparison to other games. This is extensively viable because we are talking about Pokemon, a franchise that isn’t afraid to be funny from time to time.
If the game wants to be more gritty and noir, Liam Neeson;s voice would send chills down anyone’s spine, especially if it came from a little yellow fluffball that could basically shock you to death. If the game will attempt to be more Sherlock Holmes inspired than it shows at first glance, Benedict Cumberbatch would fit that role perfectly, as long as you don’t force him to say “penguins” for extended periods of time.
Hopefully, the petition stating that Great Detective Pikachu should be voiced by Danny DeVito will pass and once the game reaches NA, we will be able to enjoy a rather interesting detective story alongside one of the most loved actors of our time.
