Florida authorities saved a homeless man from being crushed by a trash compactor.
A regular day on the job could have turned into a tragedy if no for a Waste Management worker’s presence of mind. According to Florida’s Fire Department, a homeless man who has taken refuge inside garbage bin was rescued just in time by a Waste Management worker who heard his desperate cries for help. The man was immediately taken to the local hospital where he received medical treatment for minor leg injuries.
Brian McCranie is a Waste Disposal worked employed at the Florida’s Waste Management. He declared for the press that Wednesday began like any other day. He and his colleagues just picked up a trash can, and threw the contents in the compactor bin.
After starting the machine, McCranie heard a muffled scream coming from inside the trash compactor. At first, he thought was coming from another direction and was just about to ignore it, when he realized that the sound was indeed coming from inside the compactor.
The waste disposal worked immediately shut down the machine, called 911, and climbed inside the compactor to see who was screaming. After the Fire Department had arrived, they saw a man lying inside the truck calling for help.
The Police Department identified the individual as being 32-year-old Tristian Godsey, a homeless individual who probably sought refuge overnight in one of the trash cans picked up by McCranie and his colleagues. A PD spokesperson declared that it was raining the other night, and Godsey’s only escape was to take refuge in the trash can.
Unfortunately, the man fell asleep and did not realize that the Waste Management workers came to pick up the trash cans. When the firefighters and the paramedics arrived to assess the condition of the homeless man, Godsey kept on saying that he could no longer feel his legs.
The rescue operation took at least one hour to complete, and the authorities had to bring in a large basket and a winch in order to get the homeless man out of the garbage compactor. After getting him out, the authorities immediately transported him to the St. Joseph’s Hospital, where the homeless man received treatment for his leg injury.
According to the doctors, the patient is in a stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery. Meanwhile, McCranie, the waste disposal worker who alerted the authorities after he heard the man screaming, was congratulated by the Fire Department and the Police Department for his presence of mind.
