Last year, DC and Warner Bros confirmed that they were working to bring to the big screen a Joker origin story with a different actor than Jared Leto, who portrayed the villain in Suicide Squad. At one point, Academy Award-winner Leonardo DiCaprio was eyed for the role. However, like that wasn’t confusing enough, it was recently reported that Warner Bros now wants to develop a Joker standalone movie, not about the character’s origins, but with Jared Leto’s Joker.
Moreover, it seems that the Academy Award winning actor will not only star as the main character but will also executive produce the movie. The idea is for it to pave the way for a series of Suicide Squad spin-offs. It’s worth noting that Warner Bros wanted to make a Harley Quinn-centered movie with Margot Robbie even before they had plans for Suicide Squad. Now, this report seems to suggest that the studio wants to strengthen the universe around the villains in Suicide Squad. Sadly, this won’t make things any easier for the average cinema lover who might not understand where all of these actors and characters are coming from.
A Joker standalone movie with Jared Leto is in the works
DC’s original idea was to make something similar to Marvel. They wanted to introduce new characters through their own movies. Then, the idea was to team them up in a big crossover movie. The problems began when the dark takes on Man of Steel and Batman v. Superman didn’t please the audiences. Finally, when Justice League was finally released, many fans were disappointed in the result. It made money, but it didn’t even come close to 2012’s The Avengers.
The only exception was Patty Jenkins’ incredible Wonder Woman movie, starring Gal Gadot. That was a blockbuster hit, a fan favorite and did very well with the critics. It remains to be seen what will happen with this new Joker movie and where it will fit in. As long as it gives Leto something to do, unlike Suicide Squad, it should be good enough.
