John Romero created a new Doom level. Romero took to Twitter to announce that he created another level for the famous game in 21 years. The Doom series was developed by Id Software and later by Bethesda. Through the series, a space marine that is operated by the Union Aerospace Corporation has to fight all sorts of demons and undead to survive. Doom is considered one of the pioneering firs person shooter games. These games introduced 3D graphics, networked multiplayer game and support for players. The first game was first released in 1993 and since then a lot of expansion packs, sequels and even a movie were created. Since its release, 10 million units from the Doom series were sold worldwide.
Romero is the co-creator of the series that was launched 22 years ago. The games managed to make famous the first person shooter genre, which became a business worth billions of dollars. John Carmack, Tom Hall and John Romero were the original creators of the game. Romero is no longer working on the series, which will launch its latest game this year. At the Doom’s 20th anniversary that took place two years ago, Romero said in an interview that he was very proud of his creation, especially of the deathmatch concept, which today is a staple in the shooting games. He also believes that Doom has a great legacy, influencing the development of the first person shooter genre, the violence in the video games, the mod community, the game engine and the multiplayer.
Romero left a link of the new level in a public Dropbox folder, which if downloadd contains two files, one with the new level and one that contains information on it. and when he was asked about his decision, he said that when he wants to start developing a new game, he usually likes to create new levels to games he is already familiar with, as a form of warmup. He also said that with today’s technologies, the level was very easy to create and he mentioned that the used DoomBuilder.
He chose to create the E1M8 level because it was the only level he didn’t create. He mentioned that Sandy Petersen managed to create an amazing level, but he wanted to recreate it. John Romero created a new Doom level that belongs to the DOOM1.WAD and it has the same restrictions that it had in 1993.
