Scientists have discovered that a new anti-aging drug allows you to live until 120 years old. They are testing diabetes drug Metformin to serve as a youth potion as people have always searched ways to prolong life and to stop the aging process.
Clinical trials for this drug will begin next year. The research is based on the fact that if it reduces glucose levels in the liver to treat diabetes, will increase the oxygen levels in the human cells extending their longevity; thus, preventing aging.
The FDA approved the human trial and if it will be a success, it will cut Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and other age related diseases risks.
The trial that will start in 2016 will have around 3,000 subjects with ages between 70 and 80 years old, who are at risk of cancer or heart diseases. Some participants will take the drug, others will take the placebo.
The trial was based on a previous research that showed the effects of Metformin, the most common medicine to treat diabetes and one of the cheapest to produce; it costs only $0.15 per pill.
Professor Dr. Jay Olshansky from University of Illinois, claims that it will be the breakthrough of modern era.
Early studies on worms showed that the drug made them age slower and kept them healthy for longer periods of time. Tested on mice, it was discovered that it can prolong their life up to 40%. Researchers also found that patients with diabetes, who took the drug lived longer on average than the people without the disease.
It is not yet clear how exactly the drug works: is it by prolonging life span and reducing disease risks or by treating the actual underlining causes of diseases?
Future data from the trial will give us more insight on the effects of this drug, if it helped in delaying or preventing age-related diseases. This could also mean a decrease in the percentage of patients suffering from diabetes of pre-diabetes symptoms.
Professor Gordon Lithgow from the Buck Institute for Research on Aging in California claims the possibility of increasing lifespan by reducing the diseases is revolutionary, as it never happened before.
