A new survey found that 52% of U.S citizens suffer from election stress.
Making an important decision can be very difficult but elections can make people stress out more. People have reported having election stress in this period.
A new survey found that 52% of U.S citizens suffer from “election stress” a bigger number than the ones reported last years. Maybe the fact that this year’s election is a hostile one can have an unwanted effect for some people, the pressure of choosing between two controversial candidates being a source of stress.
This type of survey is organized every year in order to see how well-being is affected by stress. This survey was made on 3,511 adult people who live in the United States.
The findings show that women and men are equally affected by election stress. The survey also showed that both Republicans and Democrats reported having this problem.
One factor that can influence the level of election stress is the age. Older people and young adults are the most affected by the election compared to people between 30 and 60 years old, who haven’t reported the same level of stress. The findings of this survey also showed that people who reported having election stress also have higher levels of stress in general.
The American Psychological Association, the one that conducts the annual survey, mentioned that there are many ways to release the stress or to avoid it. First of all, people should quit social media until the president is elected because they can be influenced by all the stories that circulate on Facebook.
“Election stress becomes exacerbated by arguments, stories, images and video on social media that can heighten concern and frustration, particularly with thousands of comments that can range from factual to hostile or even inflammatory,” said the associate executive director from APA, Lynn Bufka.
There are others ways to stay away from the stress. For instance, if you want to be informed you should only read an article or two, not the whole section because you can be confused. People should also avoid election conversation because they can lead to conflicts which cause stress, of course.
People are also advised to vote and not to dramatize if the one that they voted doesn’t get elected, maybe it was for the best. Despite the fact that election can be stressful, it is an important event and people should be aware of it and not affected by it.
