According to a new study, a hormone known as progesterone could help with the slowing down of breast cancer.
The researchers believe that a drug containing the progesterone hormone could help women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer live longer. Although the study is still in its incipient stage, the scientists said that this hormone could slow down the tumors from growing.
The new study suggest that the progesterone hormone communicates with the estrogen found in cancer cells and could change the way the tumors grow and behave. The interaction between progesterone and estrogen will help slow down the growth of the breast cancer tumors, the study revealed.
Jason Carroll, researcher at the University of Cambridge, and one of the specialists who conducted the study, explained the new findings could help better understand why some patients who have breast cancer are doing better than others. Previous studies showed that tumors with progesterone receptors were not as dangerous, but the reason for this was not very clear.
The scientists analyzed the cancer cells that are grown in the laboratory and found that there is a close association between estrogen and progesterone receptor. The studies have shown that the progesterone receptor has the capacity of reducing the estrogen receptor’s dangerous effects.
The researchers observed that the cancer cells that they grew in the lab and treated with tamoxifen and progesterone grew to half their normal size. Tamoxifen is known as the best drug for treating breast cancer at the moment.
According to Carlos Caldas, researcher at the University of Cambridge, the new treatment using the combination of progesterone and tamoxifen seemed to control the growth of the tumors more efficiently. However, further research is needed in order to determine whether this new treatment would bring health benefits for breast cancer patients.
Carroll said they compared the cancer cells that were grown with progesterone with the cells that were grown without the hormone. The experiment revealed that the cancer cells treated with the progesterone hormone grew slower.
According to the researchers, the new study helps them conduct further clinical research and find the connection between the progesterone and breast cancer and the impact it has on the tumors’ growth.
The new study suggests that a very affordable and available drug could be used to improve the condition of more than half of women who suffer from breast cancer. The researchers detailed their study’s findings in the journal Nature.
