Chikungunya may masked by another ailment similar to its symptoms –– rheumatoid arthritis. The mosquito-borne viral infection already spread to Central and South America, and the Caribbean with symptoms of swelling and joint pain.
A study conducted at the Washington University School of Medicine found that the blood tests’ results of both patients having rheumatoid arthritis and the mosquito-borne disease are the same. What can be more delicate in this issue is that when findings are believed to be arthritis, the physicians may not look for other medical histories. Travel and other past diagnosis can differentiate the two ailments and should not be overlooked.
