A Wisconsin-based company was ordered to have approximately 89,000 pounds of sausage products recalled, after receiving several user complaints that patties contained small pieces of metal.
According to a press release issued on Wednesday by the U.S Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), certain meat varieties commercialized by Kenosha Beef International “may be contaminated with extraneous materials”.
Fragments of metal have been identified by consumers in the frozen patties labeled “Johnsonville Grillers Cheddar Cheese & Bacon Flavor”, which were produced on May 13, 2015. The items subjected to the voluntary recall were available in 24-ounce cartons and 13 ½ pound cases.
They have a “best flavor by” expiration date of December 29 and the established number EST425B. If the carton has already been removed, this information can still be identified on the heat-sealed plastic bags, as 425B BFB122915. The recall does not extend to the 4-count ¼ lb. fresh Cheddar Cheese & Bacon Grillers.
Company representatives have stated that “a handful” of incidents have been reported, and as a result retail customers were informed and orders were given to have the products removed from supermarket shelves, in order to limit health risks associated to the contamination.
The company’s products had been shipped to Missouri, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Arkansas, Indiana, Kansas, Texas, Wisconsin and Iowa. An explanation for how the metal pieces entered into the composition of the meat products has not been formulated yet.
However, the company has insisted that it is committed to investigate the matter further, in order to ensure the integrity and safety of every item it delivers to the customers.
So far, no one has approached the Food Safety and Inspection Service to report adverse reactions or oral injuries caused by the metal in the beef patties. Nevertheless, anyone who has consumed such items and is currently experiencing sudden illness should immediately contact a healthcare provider.
The Department of Agriculture advises consumers who have bought sausage patties distributed by Kenosha Beef International to throw them away or have the products returned to the retailer, for a full refund. Consuming such food items is highly inadvisable, as officials have warned.
