Given the recent attention attributed to Star Wars the Force Awakens: real life uses of Star Wars’ lightsabers are being considered. For starters, scientists have finally figured out what kind of material they need to use in order to have laser-like weapons in their day to day lives.
Star Wars fans may already be familiar with the laser-looking weapons that the two protagonists from the movie are using. The new Star Wars the Force Awakens production has got everyone from tech developers to U.S. military forces thinking how to adapt lightsabers to real life.
For this reason, they have closely analyzed the structure and the form of lightsabers. In the movie, we are told that the weapons are laser-based, but scientists have explained that laser does not come in a pre-determined form. Star Wars lightsabers, on the other hand, have and exact measure of 1.2 meters. Moreover, they can melt pretty much everything that comes their way, without harming the hands of the person that is holding them.
Everyone, who is familiar with laser properties, knows that none of the above mentioned powers are possible with lasers. There is, however, a real life material that makes lightsabers a dream come true. This is plasma.
Plasma is present in many objects that we use on a regular basis. It can take a fixed form, it can be heated up to a destructive temperature, even though it will never harm flesh, only the objects it is directed to for a long period of time.
According to scientists, plasma is formed by depriving gas atoms of their electrons. This process is scientifically known as ionization and it is the main reason why plasma glows. Given all these properties, it goes without saying that plasma can help scientists develop new lightsaber-like weapons.
But what uses would lightsabers have in real life? Military officials think plasma-based weapons can be truly useful for long range targets. By providing their regular weapons with plasma lightsabers, military forces can attack enemies without getting close to them and they can melt doors to get access anywhere they want to. Plus, plasma lightsabers would have a bigger precision and they would be lighter to carry.
