Starbucks sells sugar bombs in cups of all sizes according to the latest report released by UK-based organization Action on Sugar.
Specialists working with Action on Sugar targeted big companies selling products which are damaging our health due to the high sugar contents. The recently released report ranks coffee chains according to the most popular drinks they sell and the sugar content of each drink.
Fizzy drinks are constantly in the spotlight for the high sugar contents and their negative effects on health, particularly with children. Yet coffee chains offer even more dangerous drinks that usually go under the radar.
The Action on Sugar report found three Starbucks drinks which have more sugar than one can of Coca Cola for instance. The first drink is the extra large Venti White Chocolate Mocha served with whipped cream. This particular drink has 73.8 grams of sugar per serving. In case you’re wondering, that’s the equivalent of 18 teaspoons gobbled up with just one drink.
The second Starbucks drink on Action on Sugar organization’s radar is the Venti Chai Tea Latte. This one includes 52 grams of sugar per serving, roughly the equivalent of 13 teaspoons. The third Starbucks drink that’s a genuine sugarbomb is the Venti Caramel Macchiatto with 42.1 grams of sugar. That is the approximate equivalent of 11 teaspoons of sugar.
If this the case, perhaps a can of Coca Cola is a safer alternative after all. One can of Coca Cola contains 33 grams of sugar. In the U.S., the American Heart Association guidelines recommend that men consume no more than 9 teaspoons of sugar per day. Women’s sugar consumption should be limited to 6 teaspoons per day if it can’t be reduced to less than that.
Starbucks sells sugar bombs in cups of all sizes says Action on Sugar. Kawther Hashem, researcher for the U.K.-based organization stated:
“These hot flavoured drinks should be an occasional treat, not an everyday drink. They are laden with an unbelievable amount of sugar and calories and are often accompanied by a high sugar and fat snack”.
In addition to the hot coffee-based Starbucks drinks, the hot mulled fruit drink offered by the coffee chain tops the unhealthy drinks list. This Starbucks drink contains grape with chai, cinnamon and orange, just the perfect holiday treat. It also contains 99 grams of sugar per serving. However, this particular Starbucks drink doesn’t feature on U.S. menus.
