The fact that medical marijuana holds many benefits ha been known for a long time, but this is the first time that a study has shown that it can cure migraines.
A study conducted by researchers from the University of Colorado showed for the first time that medical marijuana can cure migraines. This was the first time a study of the kind was done, due to the fact that previous U.S. regulations prevented researchers from obtaining cannabis for studies. Especially in the past years, many people started to smoke pot in order to reduce their pain and this study comes to show that they were using a right method.
For the research, 121 volunteers who had migraines were used. The team started treating their migraines with medical marijuana in 2010 and ended the treatment in 2014. The findings were incredible, as the people who suffered from migraines 10 times a month, now had less than five migraines per month. The medical marijuana was either smoked or eaten by the volunteers, as they preferred it. Most participants smoked it because the pain relief occurred much faster than when it was eaten.
The researchers believe that their discovery is very important and they are even thinking about including medical marijuana as a legal treatment against migraines, in the states where it legal. They also want to continue with the research, in order to see what other unknown benefits could the medical marijuana hold. Until now, medical marijuana has been legalized in 23 states, which include Washington, New York and California.
Even though they are very excited about their discovery, the researchers say that not everyone who has migraines should use medical marijuana. Marijuana has different effects on different people. For example, three of the participants registered increased migraines during the trial. Marijuana is like any other drug. It can be extremely benefic for some people, but it can be dangerous for others.
Marijuana is known to be beneficial to the health, and it can help the people who suffer from anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, stress, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease and it can also reduce the side effects of the treatment for cancer. Recent studies have also shown that weed can reduce the high blood pressure, the high cholesterol and the high blood sugar.
The researchers believe that serotonin plays and important role in the migraines, but they are yet to know how exactly does the marijuana help not only ease the pain, but reduce the number of migraines. Even though it has been proved that medical marijuana can cure, people who suffer from migraines should still talk to their doctors, before trying medical marijuana as a cure.
