Maybe this new finding will give dumb blonde jokes a new twist. A comprehensive study suggests that natural blondes are in fact smarter than women with other types of hair color.
U.S. researchers may have just proven that blondes are not ‘dumb.’ The recent research shows that women who claim that they’re natural blondes have higher IQ within three points than other women.
The research which involved 10,878 U.S. residents should provide enough evidence to stop any discrimination against light-haired people because of their assumed intelligence. The stereotype still has a major impact on how people get hired, promoted, or perceived by society.
Jay Zagorsky a researcher with Ohio State University noted that the newly found association between blonde hair color and a slightly higher IQ is not statistically significant. This means that there isn’t any solid evidence that blondes may actually be smarter than other women.
Zagorsky added that they may not be smarter than others but they certainly aren’t any dumber.
The study revealed that men with blonde hair were not dumber than other men. Their IQ levels are roughly the same.
Scientists used data collected by a comprehensive national survey called the US National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, which offers a sample of American people born between 1957-64.
The research showed that blondes involved in the survey had an IQ of 103.2 on average while brunettes had an IQ of 102.7. The black haired scored 100.5 , and the redheads 101.2 .
The findings also revealed that blondes had the slimmest chances of having the lowest IQ and the highest chances of featuring in the highest IQ range. So, the study may explain the urban legend that one of the most popular blondes that ever walked on Earth, Marilyn Monroe, had a n IQ of 168 which is higher than Einstein’s (160).
Yet, there are other stereotypes associated to blonde hair that science may or may not debunk in the future. For instance, there is a general feeling that blondes have an easy life and they usually get away with almost anything, though life can get tough regardless of hair color.
Plus, Hollywood heavily promotes other stereotypes. For example, movies often depict blondes as weak characters that need to be rescued, while action women are often brunettes or black haired. According to other Hollywood stereotypes, blondes are more self-centered and meaner than other women, a belief reinforced by films like Mean Girls, wbut they are also more popular (see movies such as Gossip girl, and 10 things I hate about you).
