Eat In a Mediterranean Style

Mediterranean eating style is very healthy.

Most people are concerned that fats are the biggest problem when it comes to food, but the story is different with the Mediterranean diet.

There is a huge difference between unhealthy fats that can be found in potato chips and healthy fats from fish, nuts, eggs, and olive oil. Based on the latest study, the Mediterranean eating style might help people reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, breast cancer, and heart disease.

The statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) prove that heart disease is the primary cause of death among United States adults, whereas cancer is the second.

According to Dr. Hanna Bloomfield, lead-author of the study and principal investigator from the Department of Veterans Affairs Center for Chronic Disease Outcomes Research, nutritionists need to investigate further the Mediterranean diet to establish why this eating style proves to be so efficient in reducing the risk of various health conditions, including cancer.

Until now, scientists speculate that these foods might have an anti-inflammatory effect. During the last research, experts analyzed and reviewed 332 previous studies to understand more about the benefits of the Mediterranean diet which is so rich in healthy fats.

Bloomfield stresses that unhealthy fats include trans and saturated fats, whereas healthy fats are mono-unsaturated fats present in avocados, canola oil, and olive oil.

The Mediterranean eating style has no fat intake restriction and consists of seven primary components such as fish instead of red meat, moderate consumption of dairy products, and red wine as well.

Also, this diet is rich in grain and cereal intake, dark green leafy vegetables, fruits, and other vegetables. Olive oil is the standard cooking ingredient because it is rich in healthy monounsaturated fats.

According to Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, Tufts Friedman School of Nutrition Science & Policy Dean, the results shouldn’t be so surprising because many previous studies proved that the Mediterranean eating style improves the health status of the heart and bones.

Bloomfield strongly recommends Americans to rely more on olive oil, nuts, and avocado to make their diets healthier. Also, people should not worry about gaining any extra weight because the Mediterranean diet proved to be more effective than low-fat diets, making it probably one of the most revolutionary eating styles.
