It seems that lesbian couples are more stressed than heterosexual partners.
According to a new study conducted on a wide sample of families over a course of 25 years, same-sex parents fair as well as heterosexual parents. There is no difference between the children raised by one type of couple or the other, so same-sex parents should stop worrying about what society is saying about them because scientifically, they are doing a great job.
Henny Bos and Nanette Gartrel spent a quarter of a century analyzing 190 families. Half were heterosexual couples with children, and half were homosexual partners that adopted or used in-vitro to have kids.
The researchers focused on details like location, education of both the parents and the children, race, age, the age, race and gender of the children, and the interpersonal relationships between all of the family members.
And it seems, to the surprise of homophobes everywhere, that same-sex parents fair as well as heterosexual parents when it comes to raising a healthy child. The scientists tried to analyze families raised by adults with functioning relationships. Also, it is important to compare the two types of households in order to better understand the differences between the. Apparently, there were no significant differences that needed to be understood.
The only thing that differed between the families made out of lesbian couples and those composed out of heterosexual parents was the fact that the first were more stresses than the latter. The researchers explained this phenomenon by saying that:
“[Homosexual and Lesbian] parents feel pressured to justify the quality of their parenting more than their heterosexual counterparts. We also suspect and feel that more study is warranted, but the cultural spotlight on the same-sex parenting may be part of the stress.”
The most interesting thing about this conclusion was the way in which it was tackled by some people. Even though the authors of the study keep repeating that same-sex parents fair as well as heterosexual parents when it comes to raising a child, maybe even a bit better if you count the social stigma they are continuously exposed to, some individuals only heard the part about the stress.
There have been a couple of religious websites that cited only the part of the study that dealt with same-sex marriages and the bigger amount of stress they tend to deal with as opposed to heterosexual marriages. They then used it as an argument against such marriages and even why same-sex couples shouldn’t be allowed to adopt.
