New Cataract App will be released.
According to IBM and Bausch + Lomb, based on a productive collaboration, a new app for surgeons who treat cataract will be released.
The benefits of this app are that surgeons will be able to deliver clinical insights and patient information and also IOL options on a digital platform. Plus, this app will have the function of hosting data related to health on the IBM Cloud Platform, Bluemix, while managing patient data on iPad and iPhone, and also providing to surgeons customized IOL options which will ensure a better surgical planning and better patient care.
Furthermore, corneal topography, lifestyle preferences, other biometry results and IOL calculation about each cataract patient will be registered in the information section of the app. This way, surgeons and the entire staff will benefit from a thorough and complete profile making the procedure planning and the IOL selection not only easier but also much more efficient.
The app also has the function of stocking the entire stock of information about the patients and the surgeries. This stock of information might come in handy for the surgeons as in the future they will be able to find more efficient methods and a better approach to each cataract case.
The U.S Surgical senior vice president and general manager, Andy Chang from Bausch + Lomb said that they are excited about their collaboration with IBM as this new platform will indeed innovate the ophthalmology field. According to him, surgeons will benefit from a tool which will make their job easier because they will have access to every digital profile of a patient and personalized IOL options will be provided.
The general manager of Apple partnership, Mahmoud Nagshineh, stated that cataract surgeons are among the busiest surgeons in the world. Therefore, this mobile technology will bring a significant improvement to their job.
Ophthalmologists will have access to vast information about patients. Hence, they will be better equipped to face any situation. There will be no more issues concerning the people they are tending to. Furthermore, surgeons will now be able to make better decisions based on a complete set of information.
Rumor has it that the pilot study testing might still be a couple of months away until it starts. Hopefully in the future, thanks to this app more and more patients will be helped.
