Until recently, experts and the public thought that pasta might be one of the leading causes of weight problems among people.
But it turns out that this is far from the truth because what it matters is how you eat pasta. People usually combine this type of food with a lot of meat and sauces rich in unhealthy fats, so this is why they have a higher risk of becoming overweight.
But based on the recent research, if we combine it with vegetables, we can benefit from a healthy meal. This food is part of the Mediterranean tradition, and it cannot be cut off from the menu, as it will be an insult to this tradition.
If pasta is consumed based on the health guidelines of the Mediterranean diet, then there is no risk of weight problems. This eating style consists of olive oil, nuts, fish, fruits, and vegetables. All these foods are substantial sources of healthy fats.
These fats are the opposite of the unhealthy ones thanks to the fact that by consuming them, people have no risk of developing weight problems and health conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, strokes, and heart attacks.
A group of scientists from Italy made a study to establish the connection between body mass intake and pasta intake. Some 14,402 people participated in this research, and they provided the team with information regarding their dietary intake, activity levels, weight, and height.
Then, researchers observed these participants for 24 hours to monitor their daily activities and meals. Based on this data, the team concluded that pasta consumption was linked to olive oil, garlic, onions, and tomatoes, which were all part of the Mediterranean eating style.
However, scientists stressed that pasta must make up of only one-third of the plate, whereas the rest should consist of a fresh sauce, a mix of vegetables, and fish.
Nutritionists advise people to combine pasta with eggplants, bell peppers, mushrooms, and sautéed zucchini. It is worth mentioning that whole grain pasta is the healthiest product, and it consists of quinoa, black bean, and lentil pastas.
Also, replacing the Alfredo sauce is quite recommended. A healthier choice would be a combination of olive oil, basil, and grape tomatoes. The pasta doesn’t have to be the main dish but a side dish, as it can be easily mixed with Parmesan and lemon as well.
