It looks like even big businesses can often make small mistakes because Kayem’s Al Fresco Chicken Sausages were recalled due to mislabeling. Fortunately, no health incidents were reported prior to the mass recall of over 22,000 pounds of chicken sausages.
The sausage recalled was the Al Fresco Sweet Apple Chicken Sausage due to the faulty nutritional information present on its label. The product had instead mirrored the label of another variety of Kayem sausages, the Al Fresco Apple Maple Breakfast Sausage, according to the customers which pointed out this fact to the Food Safety and Inspection Services belonging to the US Department of Agriculture.
Even though at first glance it may seem that this mirrored labeling issue is not that much of a problem, for those who are allergic to pork proteins, the matter stands in complete opposition. The sweet apple variation of the chicken sausage is encased in pork-related casings, even though this was not declared on the label.
If one would be allergic to pork proteins, he would suffer from a severe allergic reaction that can even lead to the subject’s hospitalization if not treated rapidly enough. Fortunately, as previously stated, no cases have surfaced in regards to allergic reactions, or at least, up to this point they haven’t.
Even if the products have been recalled, after they were previously shipped worldwide, the general public still had the time to purchase them and bring them home. If the case where a customer does not check the nutritional values and ingredients of the product, a worst case scenario may appear. This is why the US Department of Agriculture urges every US citizen to pay attention to the labels applied to various products before consumption.
Of course, if one thinks that he or she may have consumed one of these mislabeled products when they are suffering from pork protein allergy, urgent medical assistance should be sought after. Any health care provider will be able to discern if you are suffering from the onset of an allergic episode or not, prescribing the necessary treatment so that a more severe phenomenon does not occur.
Bearing in mind the fact that Kayem’s Al Fresco Chicken Sausages were recalled due to mislabeling, the general public should exercise a slight degree of caution when they know a product can contain ingredients or nutrients that directly affect their health. This type of mislabeling incident, even though rare, can still occur at every product manufacturer due to negligence or a system error.
