Daniel Chase, a 53-year old man from Kent County, Michigan, unknowingly carried around a $1 million winning Powerball ticket in his pocket for more than two months. The man learned he was the lucky winner after he cleaned out his wallet last week.
The state lottery has announced the winning numbers: 09-10-32-42-55 on Dec. 16, but strangely no one came to pick up the $1 million prize. Lottery officials only knew that the winning ticket has been bought from a Speedway station in Alma.
Yet, more than two months later, a middle-aged man came to claim the prize. He explained that he has kept the winning ticket in his wallet not knowing he was the big winner until recently.
Chase realized he had won the lottery after he cleaned out his wallet and decided to double check the three Powerball tickets he has found there. To his surprise, one ticket matched all five winning balls drawn late last year.
The man also told lottery officials that he has a habit of putting Powerball tickets in his wallet and wait “for a while” before he checks them. He said that this way he feels much better because he has more time on his hand to dream about being the big winner. Yet, this time the dream became reality.
Chase recalled that when he checked the three Powerball tickets on the official website he couldn’t believe his own eyes that he had all the matching numbers.
“I thought I was looking at the wrong drawing,”
Later that day, he asked his wife to confirm that he had a winning ticket. But when his wife also said that it looked like a winning ticket, they both drove off to Meijer to have their tickets scanned.
The man said that he received the message to see a clerk on one of the tickets. Yet, both he and his wife were still incredulous. But when the other two tickets did not return a similar message the couple realized that they might have a big winner.
Nevertheless, they weren’t 100% convinced. They had to get back home, check the Lottery’s site once more and stumble upon a post about an unclaimed $1 million prize since December. It was then when they realized that they had won.
Ms. Chase noted that it was so hard to believe that they actually won the lottery. For several days, the couple “just looked at each other and smile,” she said.
