Recent research has shown that food subsidies including corn, cheese, and meat increase the risk of overweight because they contain unhealthy fats.
Health officials have established that people who usually eat this type of food have higher chances of becoming overweight and even obese.
Worse, it increases the risk of elevated levels of blood sugar and cholesterol that might lead to a wide variety of health conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, strokes, heart attacks, brain disease, and cancer.
According to Karen R. Siegel, lead researcher from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the U.S. Department of Health and Humans Services Dietary Guidelines for Americans and U.S. Department of Agriculture support the concept that Americans should become more oriented towards a healthier diet consisting of moderate amounts of dairy, protein, whole grains, vegetables, and fruits.
Also, citizens should avoid high consumption of refined grains, salt, sugar, and saturated fats as they can lead to severe consequence on our health.
Siegel stressed that the present situation is concerning because federal agricultural subsidies financially support the production of livestock, dairy, sorghum, rice, wheat, soybeans, and corn.
U.S. Health officials underline that the government should take active measures to reduce the level of subsidies on corn, dairy products, and beef. Instead, the government should support farmers in their efforts to raise affordable vegetables and fruits.
On the other hand, grain industries, dairy, and beef are a crucial part of the United States economy. But it doesn’t mean that food companies have an excuse to poison foods.
During the research, Siegel and her team monitored 10,000 Americans who participated in a study that recorded what they had eaten in the day before the survey.
Based on the results, 56 percent of the calories consumed by participants originated from foods containing subsidies. Also, these people had a 41 percent chance of developing belly fat, and they were 37 percent more vulnerable to eventually becoming obese.
Plus, they had a 21 percent increased risk of having higher and unhealthy blood sugar levels, whereas 14 percent of them were more likely to develop a high cholesterol level.
In other words, people must be aware of the fact that junk food increases the risk of various health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, and obesity which are already one of the leading causes that affect the American population every day.
Food subsidies must be reduced to improve the life quality of the citizens and to encourage them to adopt a healthier lifestyle.
