It is already known there are already many years since the sunscreen market has become varied with a generous supply of lotions, sprays and creams and a lot of active ingredients such as avobenzone and zinc. Plus, sunscreen is believed to be the best way to tackle the UV rays that can cause cancer.
The 10th annual Guide to Sunscreens has been released by the Environmental Working Group, establishing the BS factor, efficacy, and safety of hundreds of sunscreen brands.
According to EWG, 203 sport and beach sunscreens are regarded as the best on the market, with 22 stellar options for kids. The prices vary from the cheap and affordable drugstore brands, such as Cucumbers, Yes and Aveeno to more expensive products based on minerals such as Beautycounter, Blue Lizard, and Badger.
However, it was established that the worst sunscreen brands for kids are Neutrogena, CVS, Coppertone and Banana Boat. Still, EWG stated that sunscreen regulations are on the right path as starting from 2011, all products must include warnings about aging and skin cancer, and cannot rely on misleading claims such as “sunblock” or “waterproof.”
Nevertheless, beginning from 2007, EWG recorded a massive increase in the availability of mineral only sunscreen, from 17 percent to 34 percent of products in 2016. According to EWG senior analyst, Sonya Lunder, many of the statistics of this year are not good. Because the FDA does not set firm rules for skin protection from sunscreen, there are too many products and marketing trends that seem too good to be true.
But the biggest issue is that out of over 750 sport, and beach sunscreens, almost ¾ of them contain potentially dangerous active ingredients such as retinyl palmitate (a form of vitamin A dangerous for skin), oxybenzone (a known hormone disruptor) and provide inferior sun protection.
Plus, the problem with high SPFs is that people spend way too much time in the sun and use only a little sunscreen. Even if the FDA has proposed the sale prohibition of higher than 50 SPF, there are many SPF products higher than 70 on the market.
In addition to this, sunscreen sprays are also too many. All in all, it is healthy to use sunscreen, but only if it contains safe, active ingredients.
