Women are more likely to suffer from anxiety than men.
After a recent survey, scientists discovered that women are twice more vulnerable to anxiety than men. A team of researchers from Cambridge University established that adults younger than 35 years old and those with health conditions are primarily affected.
Plus, they estimated that four out of one hundred people suffer from anxiety. After analyzing 48 published surveys, scientists believe that further research is needed to find out more about anxiety problems. Over 60 million people are the victims of anxiety every year in the EU.
Furthermore, North America has the highest rank, with eight in one hundred people suffering from anxiety whereas East Asia, is least affected by three people in one hundred.
Compared to depression, anxiety caught little attention until recently. Fortunately, the number of individuals suffering from this mental health issue hasn’t increased between 1990 and 2010. According to Olivia Remes, review author from the department of public health and primary care at the University of Cambridge, life can become tough because of anxiety disorders.
Moreover, even if depression is important, anxiety was neglected throughout the year, and is equally debilitating. In addition to this, anxiety is linked to high costs to society, increase the risk for suicide, and can cause the development of psychiatric disorders and other diseases.
Health services need to change their perspective towards this problem and start taking it seriously because it is one of the most common everyday problems in our society. Mental health issues related to stress are the invisible enemy that has spread worldwide.
Anxiety is a feeling of unease, fear, and worry which persists for a considerable amount of time with the risk of becoming overwhelming, burdening everyday life. In addition to this, the usual physical symptoms are disrupted sleeping, feeling nauseous and raised blood pressure.
From this point on, this issue turns into a mental health problem that needs a diagnostic and a change in lifestyle. According to Remes, women are more vulnerable to anxiety because they are more predisposed to stress and hormonal fluctuations.
Plus, people with chronic diseases are most likely to suffer from anxiety as they have to deal with a double level of stress. For instance, 15% to 23% percent of cancer patients and 32% of people with multiple sclerosis have an anxiety disorder.
Experts recommend people to avoid the excess of alcohol and caffeine, plus they urge people to stop smoking as well. In addition to this, regular exercises might also help reduce anxiety.
