Ironic as it may seem, a funeral in East Flatbush ended up with yet another two dead people and other four injured, after someone opened fire outside Emmanuel Church of God on Flatbush Avenue near E. 32nd Street, in Brooklyn. The tragic event happened on Monday, the 27th of April around 8:30 p.m.
The police say that a silver SUV with three men in it was seen at the scene of the two murders while the people attending the wake were leaving the service. When the fire started, at least a person from inside the church shot back, hurting one of the attendees.
The dead bodies were identified as Sharieff Clayton, aged 40, from the Bronx and Ronald Murphy, aged 44, from Brooklyn. They both died later on at Kings County Hospital.
Three other people (a 37-year-old man, a 38-year-old woman and another 29-year-old woman) who were wounded during the shootings were found at the scene and taken to the hospital. They are reported to be in stable condition. Another 40-year-old man was found on E. 32nd St. and Farragut Road, a few blocks away from the scene, in a vehicle.
He was believed to be one of the gunmen and he was found shot in the stomach. According to witnesses in front of the church, guns were fired at least 15 times. According to NYPD Chief Robert Boyce, more than a few people were shooting, not only toward the church but also in front of it.
The police arrived shortly after the shooting, which was announced by NYPD’s new ShotSpotter system. Crime scene investigators examined the site all night, collecting evidence and looking for clues that might indicate who did this. The police are looking for two cars that drove away from the scene.
The shootings event that took the lives of two and hurt four other people prompted officials in East Flatbush to give statements that pinpointed the importance of putting an end to gun violence. Jumaane Williams, a city council member stated: “We want to make sure we prevent any retaliatory shootings that may come from this”.
This unusual event for East Flatbush represents a wake-up call for all the authorities governing the area. According to Tony Herbert , community activist and founder of One Family, “This again proves that there are too many guns on the streets in the hands of people who have no regard for human life”.
Residents of the area are very eager to find out that the gunmen are behind bars.
According to officials, the motive is not yet clear and the police are still looking into it. The funeral held at Emmanuel Church of God was in honor of Jose Luis Robles (39-year-old), who was supposedly a former gang member who had also been imprisoned. People who knew him said that he had left gang life a while before.
He died of natural causes. The reason for the shootings might have been an old rivalry between gangs, but this fact is denied by close members of his family. Other sources say that the shootings occurred while people were waiting to pay their respects and had an argument of some sort. No official arrests have been made so far.
