If you are a parent, one of your main concerns is your child and his health. A new study reveals an unexpected fact regarding children’s health: the vast majority of American children have heart problems.
The new study was carried out at the initiative of the University of Minnesota, and had Dr. Julia Steinberger as a team leader and principal author. The team of researchers found that 91% of the American children have heart problems, most of them related to unhealthy alimentation.
Parents should be much more careful when it comes to their children’s diet. They study was based on information and results obtained from children with ages between 2 and 19 years old. They analyses showed that they had large amounts of sugar in their organism (from sweets and beverages), and lacked nutritious, healthy food, like fruits, vegetable, and fish.
Apart from the lack of a healthy diet, children also lack exercising, which is something strongly not recommended. A child should exercise at least sixty minutes a day, and this doesn’t mean going to the gym, but walking, playing in the park, practicing some kind of sport, and, generally, spending time outdoors as much as possible.
The numbers are alarming, as the study found that even kids under five years of age are obese (10%). The percentage is even higher with other age groups, such as children aged 12 to 19; with them, the percentage reaches even 27.
There is another problem with teens and adolescents, namely that they are at the critical age when bad, unhealthy habits start to develop, such as smoking.
On the other hand, there is good news too: most of the children’s analysis for blood pressure had good results.
Pediatrician, Julia Steinberger talks about her devotion to the job and about how she can help children and their parents:
“As pediatricians, we see a tremendous opportunity to strive toward true CV health if we think of the factors that maintain health early in life. It’s much harder to turn back the clock. Kids are born with ideal health. So if we could make the effort to improve some of these elements, especially the diet and physical activity, I think we would have a much healthier young adult and adult population.”
The results of the study and the doctor’s advice should function as guidelines for parents and their children.
The study was published in Circulation (journal).
