By the way things are going, religions known from the beginning of time might disappear. Research has shown that young Americans don’t believe in God the way religion wants them too.
As the world keeps modernising, the word religion keeps transforming along with it. People born after 1980 tend to see religion in their own way and refuse to affiliate themselves with any existent religion.
A large number of Americans do not belong to any religion and refuse to identify with any of them. The trend is mostly common and keeps growing among young adults. People belonging to the catholic religion are protestants have shown a decrease in the number of members.
According to a survey released by the Pew Research centre, has conducted a reseacrh on over 35,000 Americans and has stated that the number of Americans who choose to belong to no religion keeps growing.
Numbers have shown that the so called “non believers” represent presently up to 23% of the United States population, a rise of 7% since 2007, when they stood for 16% of the population.
This statistic includes both agnostics who are around 7%, atheists and the rest of them(16%) who claim that they are nothing when it comes to this matter.Some of them tend to be more into the secular area while others are followers of their self made belief.
In the state of Pennsylvania, the “non believers” reached a number of 21% from 13% in eight years.Catholics have been on the opposite side and have shown a decrease of 5%, from 29% to 24% while protestants went down from 505 to 47%.
The group of people who refuse to be associated with a religion of the world has been growing for the past 20 years at a very fast pace, explained Greg Smith, researcher at the Pew.
Even so, America still remained the country with the greatest number of christians, who are believed to be around 173 million.
Immigrants are adding to the number of small religious groups believers, such as Hindus, Muslims or Jehovah witnesses. Almost 2% of the Unites States population, belong to the Jewish religion, and this number has been quite stable since 2007.
Muslims have shown a growth and went up from 0.4% to 0.9%, Buddhists represent around 0.7% while Hindus adepts have grown from 0.4% to 0.7%.
America can be called one of the most religious diversified countries in the world.The United States have reached a point where people free of any religion are in a larger number than wide spread religions such as catholicism and protestants.
There are a lot of individuals for whom the word religion is something they recall as that thing their parents made them to do while they were young. However, many of them are practicing their belief in their own way, which in their eyes can be called being religious, explained an expert in religious history.
It is not clear if young adults will become closer to a certain religion as they get older. Even if people become more religious as they advance in age, numbers haven’t shown this happening for the past years. None of the age groups have shown to be more religious since the last survey from 2007.
In 2007 just 16% of the young adults born after 1980 have claimed not to belong to any religion, which means that youngster born after 1990 could be even less religious than them.
