Twitter Employee Used Last Day of Work to Deactivate Trump’s Personal Account

November 4, 2017 By John Cooper Leave a Comment

donald trump

The President of the United States was blocked out of his Twitter personal account for a total of 11 minutes. The reason for this interruption wasn’t any violation of the company’s terms and conditions clauses. Instead, one of Twitter’s employees used her security clearance during her last day within the company to deactivate this particular user.

Former Twitter Customer Officer Was Crowned King for How She Tackled Trump’s Personal Account

On Thursday night, Donald Trump was unable to enter his Twitter account for 11 minutes. The phenomenon couldn’t have passed without authorities signaling the social media company about this misunderstanding. Therefore, Twitter representatives claimed at first that the account was suspended temporarily due to human error.

However, the company changed its statement after only a couple of hours. This time, the accident turned out to be a deliberate intention of a former customer support agent. The person in question went to the office for the last employee’s day of work and deactivated Trump’s account.

The Internet responded mainly with cheers in favor of the anonymous Twitter support officer. The most vocal users were Trump’s critics who even elevated the employee to the level of a hero. Others viewed this episode as entertaining and laughed about it.

The Incident Reverts Back to Old Concerns Regarding the Influence of Tech Companies

On the other hand, this incident uncovers the degree of vulnerability that concerns all Twitter accounts. Previously, Twitter refused to disclose any security measures it took to protect their user who happens to be the most powerful person in the world, namely Donald Trump. This silence suggested that the company implemented additional strategies to ensure the safety of this particular personal account.

Despite these extra layers of security, a corporate worker still managed to reduce world’s most influential person to silence in the digital world. At the moment, nobody knows which Twitter employees have access to user accounts.

It is unknown if the anti-Trump former Twitter staffer was able only to activate or deactivate accounts or she could have done more changes than this. Nonetheless, the way this employee chose to spend his last day at Twitter opened old concerns regarding the power of tech companies.

Elon Musk Shares Progress He Made with Boring Company on Twitter

October 30, 2017 By John Cooper Leave a Comment

elon musk

Elon Musk is a visionary with various interests. He first changed the way people make payments online with PayPal. Afterwards, he wanted to offer space exploration to people, and he founded SpaceX. When he understood how much good electric, self-driving vehicles can do to the world, he created Tesla. His latest mission is to curb traffic congestion that freezes all metropolises. For this problem, he no longer searched the skies for a solution, but he considered that a Boring Company is an ideal fix.

Musk’s Boring Company Is Working on an Underground Alternative to Interstate 405

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) October 28, 2017

On Saturday, Elon Musk decided to share with his Twitter community the first evidence that his boring plans are taking shape. Instead of words, he chose a one-day-old picture of the Los Angeles tunnel that his company is working on.

His post revealed the fact that the company started its activity with one of the most congested highways in the United States. This is about Interstate 405. The first underground tunnel will start from Los Angeles International Airport and will follow the highway all the way to U.S. Route 101.

Elon Musk announced that the corridor measures so far 500 feet. However, it will take at least one year to reach Route 101. Furthermore, Tesla CEO explained that his subterranean corridor is going to work differently than subways.

Los Angeles Might Open Its First Underground Tunnel in 2019

In fact, both pedestrians and vehicles will be able to take advantage of this underground shortcuts. All passengers and machines will fit on pods which are powered by electric skates.

The main artery will encourage a speed of 150 mph. People will enter and exit this principal corridor by opting for a side tunnel. On top of that, there will be an inclination positioned after each mile that will streamline the traffic.

The Boring Company revealed its plans to solve the traffic problem back in April during a TED2017 conference in Vancouver. Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti contacted Musk after less than a month for collaboration. It turns out that the second most populous city in the United States will open its first underground highway in 2019.

2018 Honda Gold Wing Drives Motorcycles into the Tech Era with Apple CarPlay

October 27, 2017 By John Cooper Leave a Comment

honda motorcycle

Honda Gold Wing first appeared in the mid 70’s as a comfortable motorcycle. The automaker stepped away from the sportbike image in order to create an extremely large template that can carry a lot of baggage. However, Honda decided that it is time for a rebirth of their flagship motorcycle. The 2018 model sports Apple CarPlay introducing this industry into the tech era.

The New Honda Gold Wing Is Lighter than Ever Before

Honda wanted to make a faster, lighter, and more progressive motorbike. This vision was fully incorporated in the new 2018 Honda Gold Wing. The supercruiser is now featuring cutting-edge upgrades such as new chassis, innovative engine, and the 21st-century technology. This combination might be the winning recipe for high sales.

On Tuesday evening, the company unveiled the new machine at Santa Barbara’s Museum of Exploration and Innovation. The engine is still based on a six-cylinder mold.

However, the main changes around this machine targeted the materials. The team behind this project managed to cut out more than 80 pounds from the original weight. The massive reduction will make bikers feel the engine more sharply. The performance has a lot to gain from this new weight.

The new motorcycle offers four ride modes. Users can switch between them whenever they want for austere weather, fuel economy, sports riding or touring. On top of that, some models offer control over adjustable torque. All new Gold Wings will come with keyless ignition, cruise control, and a special function for starting the engine on a hill.

The Revamped Honda Supercruiser Is the First Motorcycle to Enter the Tech Era

Nonetheless, the most innovative aspect of this latest Honda model is the fact that it learned a lot from the modern tech era. The company called its latest product as an ‘industry first.’ That’s thanks to the fact that the motorcycle comes with a display that can run Apple CarPlay.

The chassis now supports 110 liters of storage through three cases. The passenger seat is comfortable to better enjoy long-distance riding. The 2018 model comes with a competitive price tag of $23,500. However, for added features such as airbags or destination charges clients will have to go up as much as $31,500. Enthusiasts can test one such machine from dealers as early as February.

Dogs Make Certain Facial Expressions Only When Humans Are Looking

October 20, 2017 By John Cooper Leave a Comment

girl and pet dog

New research looked into a pet characteristic that helps dogs communicate with people better. It turns out that our furry friends learned to make certain facial expressions to convey a message to humans.

Dogs Are Activating Facial Muscles in Response to Human Attention

On Thursday, a team of researchers at the University’s Dog Cognition Centre reported some intriguing findings in the journal Scientific Reports. This paper is the first of its kind that attests dogs are acting differently when humans are watching them.

Scientists observed dogs’ reaction when they were getting some really tasty treats when no human was around. The conclusion was that even though they are excited, dogs don’t react with happy expressions if no person is in the same room with them. However, they do move their facial muscles in response to human attention.

Dog cognition expert Dr. Juliane Kaminski is the lead author of the study. She claimed that their findings underline the existence of a newly discovered way through which dogs communicate with humans.

“We can now be confident that the production of facial expressions made by dogs are dependent on the attention state of their audience and are not just a result of dogs being excited.”

Dog’s Extensive Range of Facial Expressions Help Them Connect with Humans

The experiment involved 24 dogs of different breeds with ages between one and 12. All of them were pets with their own family of humans.

The first stage consisted of placing a person three feet away from a dog. While the human was going through a series of reactions, researchers measured dog’s facial expressions with DogFACS. This is a coding system that records facial changes in connection to muscle movement.

The second stage involved isolating dogs with only some delicious treats with them. As stated above, their range of expressions was highly smaller than when they were in the presence of people.

On the other hand, the study needs more efforts to understand what the source of this behavior is. Is it a hardwired response that dogs are born with after 30,000 years of living with humans? Or can dogs understand people’s state of mind?

Dubai Police to Patrol the City from Above Thanks to Multirotor Hoverbikes

October 16, 2017 By John Cooper Leave a Comment

dubai police supercars

The Middle East has been working on a jewel of technology and luxury for many years now. Dubai has become an international business hub thanks to its enthusiasm with which the city adopted the Western culture. While tourism represents by far the largest source of income, the city drew criticism for human rights violations regarding workforce that builds iconic skyscrapers. The latest gimmick that Dubai will employ to stay in the limelight is the first aerial police patrol with multirotor hoverbikes.

The Dubai Police Enjoyed One of the Greatest Moments at GITEX 2017

Dubai has just finished hosting the largest tech expo that the gulf region has ever seen. GITEX gathered hundreds of business projects, startups, tech experts, and investors under one roof to imagine the future. This year’s edition added several new segments. These are smart cities and manufacturing, transportation tech, and robotics.

One of the highlights of the event came from the Police of Dubai itself. The department introduced the crowds to its first fleet of multirotor hoverbikes. The gear can propel officers up to 16 feet in the air with a maximum speed of 43 mph. When the robot takes over for an unmanned expedition, the hoverbike can reach 50 mph.

The patrol sessions will be short though. The gear needs a recharge once every three hours. On top of that, the range cannot exceed a 25-minute area. However, when times call the equipment can enjoy a swift energy replenish thanks to swappable batteries.

The Fleet of Multirotor Hoverbikes Might Remain within Sci-Fi Area

The innovative mask the police seemed willing to take in Dubai is of Russian design called the HoversurfScorpion 3. The aspect looks inspired from action movies. The basic quadcopter bike is powered by four rotors made of wood.

On the other hand, the chances are that this was only an eye-catching magic show. The image of a flying police patrol will slowly fall into oblivion. That’s because the technology is at an embryonic stage.

The equipment doesn’t inspire a safe enough structure to transport 400 pounds of metal above traffic without causing an accident. At the moment, even 4-pound drones are off limits due to a plausible scenario where it loses power and starts swooping on the crowd below with deadly spinning propellers.

Hawaiian Doctor Pressures FDA in Court for Wider Access to Abortion Pill

October 6, 2017 By John Cooper Leave a Comment

pill machine

The American Civil Liberties Union has just filed a lawsuit against the Food and Drug Administration. The legal measure intends to force the federal agency to lift access limitations to the abortion pill. The organization together with a Hawaiian doctor believes that authorities are actually in violation of a Supreme Court ruling.

Dr. Chelius’s Remote Island Has No Local Abortion Providers

On Tuesday, ACLU opened a legal battle against FDA regarding access to Mifeprex. Such a measure received an explanation on ACLU’s website in a blog post. The organization claimed that it had joined the efforts of a Hawaiian doctor, Graham Chelius, to offer better health care to women.

Dr. Chelius is a successful pediatrician who took care of hundreds of births. However, he is appalled by the fact that there are no local solutions to women’s right to an abortion in Waimea, Hawaii. Whenever his patients consult him on this issue, Dr. Chelius has no other choice than to redirect them to a 150-miles away facility for professional help.

“There are no abortion providers on our island.”

The remote community in Kauai has to deal with numerous issues. The rates here are high in poverty, domestic violence, food shortage, and health experts. Dr. Chelius intends to improve his community starting with offering women control over their own bodies.

A 2016 Supreme Court Ruling Forced Authorities to Clear Any Obstacles in Women’s Access to the Abortion Pill

The main issue stems from the fact that the FDA doesn’t allow retail pharmacies to accept prescriptions for abortion pills. Only entities that are recognized by drug manufacturers such as clinics and medical offices have the approval to issue this medication. On the other hand, the federal agency applied milder regulations on other drugs that are viewed as less safe than Mifeprex such as Viagra or blood thinners.

Dr. Chelius claimed that his anti-abortion colleagues made it impossible to register his clinic with abortion pill manufacturers. Therefore, he intends to force FDA to endorse a 2016 Supreme Court decision.

The ruling known as ‘Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt’ ordered authorities to clear any hurdle that can impair women’s access to abortion. The goal of the new lawsuit against FDA is to allow local pharmacies to fill prescriptions for Mifeprex.

Guppy Fish Revealed To Have Complex Personalities

September 26, 2017 By John Cooper Leave a Comment

a guppy fish surrounded by marine plants

A new study revealed that guppy fish have actually complex personalities.

Guppy fish have quite complex personalities, according to a recent study conducted by researchers at the Exeter University, England. These found that, when faced with stressful situations, each fish responded in its own way.

Their reactions were also broader than just being risk-taking or risk-averse ones.

Stress Reveals the Complex Personality of Guppy Fish

The team of scientists, of the Exeter University Centre for Ecology and Conservation, studied the individual reactions of Trinidadian guppy fish. These were faced with diverse stressful situations, specially designed to trigger various stress levels.

In doing so, the team of researchers reported detecting significant differences in the reactions of the fish. According to the team, these could also not be explained by just applying a risk-averse or risk-taking behavior stamp.

The fish were reported to have returned widely different reactions to the same situation. For example, the fish were placed in an unfamiliar environment. While some of them tried to hide, and other to escape, some fish were ‘cautiously’ exploring this new habitat.

Tom Houslay, one of the researchers involved, states that the reactions of the guppy fish were different and “consistent” over time and also in diverse environments or different situations.

“So, while the behaviour of all the guppies changed depending on the situation – for example, all becoming more cautious in more stressful situations – the relative differences between individuals remained intact,” continued Houslay.

The researchers will now look to determine why and what led to the development of these fish’s complex personalities. So the next phase of the study will reportedly target to find the genetics behind these personalities and their associated traits.

Alastair Wilson, also part of the study, explains that the team will try and establish the relation between personality and other “facets of life”. Or to what degree this is driven by genetic and not environmental factors.

He explains that the ‘real goal’ is to better understand the “evolutionary processes”.

A study paper with the current study results is available in the journal Functional Ecology.

Herbivore Dinosaurs Noted To Have Consumed Shelled Animals As Well

September 21, 2017 By John Cooper Leave a Comment

illustration of herbivore dinosaurs known as hadrosaurs

A new study found that a species of herbivore dinosaurs used to consume shelled animals.

Some of the largest dinosaur species known to have roamed Earth were also herbivores, in most cases, vegetarians. However, a new study found that at least some of these herbivore dinosaurs did not seem to have a problem with consuming crustaceans or shelled animals, as well.

Crustaceans, a Food Source Even for Herbivore Dinosaurs

This latest discovery comes from a team of researchers from the Denver Museum of Nature & Science studying the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in Utah. According to them, the ancestors of modern-day crustaceans such as lobsters, shrimps, and crabs, were rich sources of calcium and proteins.

The study team reported finding crustacean shells in more than ten corpolite samples, which are basically fossilized bodily waste. The samples were collected from three distinct stratigraphic layers, ones spread over 13 miles of the national monument.

Because of this, the researchers tend to believe that the shelled animals were not mistakenly swallowed, but more like consumed by herbivore dinosaurs.

An analysis of the corpolite samples indicates that these most likely come from a sort of duck-billed dinosaurs known as hadrosaurs. Although the samples consist mainly of “jumbled fragments of rotting wood”, they also revealed “thick bits and pieces of fossilized shells”.

As the team points out, this also seems to indicate that ancestors of crustaceans were living in coniferous, decaying wood.

“From what we know about dinosaurs, this was a totally unexpected behavior. It was such a surprising discovery we wondered what the motivation could have been,” explains Karen Chin.

She is the Museum of Natural History at the University of Colorado, Boulder’s curator of paleontology. Chin and her colleagues theorize that the consumption of shelled animals might possibly have been linked to the reproductive activities of these herbivore dinosaurs.

The modern-day descendants of dinosaurs, birds, were noted to increase their calcium and protein intake during the breeding season to increase their reproduction rates. This seems to strengthen the scientists’ theory. The team also pointed out that it would be hard to clearly prove intent when discussing feeding habits, in this case.

A paper with the current study findings is available in the journal Scientific Reports.

Juno Mission Intercepts Mysterious Auroras on Jupiter

September 10, 2017 By John Cooper Leave a Comment

jupiter planet
NASA scientists working on Juno mission had the chance to examine the planet Jupiter up close. In their analyses, they observed unusually large amounts of energy spinning within the polar regions of the planet forming Earth-like auroras. However, scientists didn’t expect to find a different origin to this spectacular phenomenon.

Juno Mission Helped Scientists Understand that Auroras on Jupiter Are Different from Those on Earth

Barry Mauk and his team collected numerous data on Jupiter. They used instruments based on energetic-pattern detectors and ultraviolet spectrographs to record various aspects about this far-away gas giant. The team at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory noticed how powerful electric potentials coupled with the magnetic field.

The results are electrons at the Jovian atmosphere that move at 400,000 electron volts. This speed is up to 30 times higher than those of the largest auroras scientists ever observed on Earth.

Northern Europe, Alaska, and Canada host the spectacular auroras at only several thousands of volts. Nonetheless, scientists were aware that Jupiter’s auroras are among the most powerful such natural events in the solar system. However, the mysterious piece of the puzzle here is that Jupiter’s potentials are not leading to the largest auroras as it happens on Earth.

Cracking The Origin of Jupiter Auroras Will Lead to Groundbreaking Advancements in Planetary Physics

Mauk is sure that cracking the identity of these powerful energetic particles would help them better understand the radiation belts that embrace the planet. So far, the Juno mission encountered several issues due to encounteres with these areas.

On top of that, this body of knowledge can improve spacecraft and astronaut protection when it comes to challenging space environments. The comparison between Jupiter and Earth will also break new ground in planetary physics.

Juno spacecraft has been floating around the gas giant since 2016. It will continue to collect data and learn more about its origins, atmosphere, and structure. On top of that, scientists have not finished yet deciphering recent data. Thanks to them, NASA can better understand how auroras act under different sources of influence.

The Existence of Various Leaf Sizes Is Due to Climate Conditions

September 3, 2017 By John Cooper Leave a Comment

tropical leaves
Since the 19th century, plant geographers have been marveling at the luxurious collection of leaf sizes and types that Mother Earth created. Over time, they noticed that plants get longer leaves when they are closer to the equator. On the other hand, these parts of plants tend to shrink when the latitude increases. A new study might hold the answers to what exactly triggers such a phenomenon. The findings suggest that the rich patterns depend on various climatic factors.

The Differences in Leaf Sizes Depend on the Combination of Irradiance, Moisture, and Temperature

Ian Wright of Macquarie University in New South Wales published a new scientific paper in journal Science regarding the leaves of plants across the world. Wright together with his colleagues analyzed a collection of 7,670 species coming from 682 regions of the world.

Their collected data suggested that certain climatic agents dictate the shape of a leaf. The most important agent is the difference between nighttime and daytime leaf-to-air temperatures. As a consequence, the plethora of leaf sizes was created by different mixtures between moisture, irradiance, and temperature.

The various shapes of leaves were created to withstand the risks of chilling and overheating at nighttime and daytime respectively. As a consequence, hot and humid locations are giving birth to plant species with large leaves. On the other hand, the cold and arid climates at high latitudes and elevations are encouraging vegetation to develop short parts.

The Paper Has Also Discovered a New Hint to the Existence of Global Warming

Large leaves come in thicker sizes which develop slower heat exchanges with the air. In other words, they trigger bigger differences in leaf-to-air temperatures. The high temperatures and irradiation make plants to be in higher need for water deposits. Therefore, they create generous leaf sizes.

The paper has also delivered new hints at the impact of global warming on the environment. As the temperatures are getting higher over time, several reports pointed out that the average size of leaves started to increase. This indicates that their environments are getting hotter.
