Presidential Candidate Bernie Sanders and three other senators are fighting for the people’s right to fair internet pricing from their providers.
Senators Al Franken, Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey, along with Sanders have sent the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) a very powerful letter in which they point out the dire need for a change in the laws that internet carriers must abide by.
They explain that due to the fact there is a lower and lower option pool when it comes to picking an internet carrier, these companies can basically make up their own rules, without fear of the consequences. Since a handful of companies have essentially monopolized the internet market, they get to exploit the American people.
However, the senators point out that the time has come for a change to be made on this matter, because people deserve fair offers at fair prices and that some clear limits need to be set to what these companies can ask of the American people.
“The Commission’s collection of pricing information is critical to upholding its mission to protect consumers and promote competition, and to deploy broadband across America,” said the Senators’ letter.
It is only by establishing competition among these companies that the FCC could obtain fair pricing for people. The situation is quite desperate, as 37% of people are often unable to make any choice whatsoever, as there is only one carrier that they can get their internet from, according to the letter.
These “de facto telecommunications monopolies” need to be eliminated, because this type business is unethical by any existent standards. Furthermore, the only ones who end up losing in this situations are the people who are obligated to pay irrationally high prices for often unsatisfactory services.
It is unacceptable that these people cannot even complain about the low quality of the service, since they only have one option in terms of companies. This exploitation needs to be put to an end.
The FCC has yet to respond to the senators’ letter, but all eyes will be on them in the near future, so they will be obligated to respond soon. Whether or not the letter is just a publicity stunt meant to bring Bernie Sanders more popularity for the upcoming elections, the results will clearly work out in the people’s advantage.
