Astronomers announce that tonight the sky will look quite different from what we were used to. This is because a black moon is due to rise. It is not a rare event, but it is significant, as it is quite unusual. However, specialists advise us not to get scared, as this is no apocalyptic sign.
The natural phenomenon of the black moon can be scientifically explained by experts. According to them, each month, a new moon and a full moon sail the sky. This month, however, we will witness two new moons. The second is simply called a “black moon.” The last such phenomenon was observed two years ago, in March 2014.
The phenomenon gained its bleak name due to the movement of the moon and the position of the Sun and Earth. The moon will be fully covered, and it can’t be seen from the Earth. The night will be dark, with no silver moon to enlighten it. However, stars will shine bright, and you will have a splendid view at them. The night is also perfect for watching meteors.
Experts say that black moons occur approximately once in thirty-two months. They estimate that the event tonight will be visible from the Central Standard Time Zone at 7:11 p.m. They also predict that the next such event will happen in the summer of 2019.
Specialists also talk about the possibility of a blue moon. This is the phenomenon of two full moons in the same month. Blue moons are also due to happen every thirty-two months, which is more than two years and a half.
As far as the black moon is concerned, superstitions associate it with the end of the world and other apocalyptic scenarios. The new moons seem to be associated with the Greek goddess Hecate as well. She was the goddess of magic, patronizing the ghosts and the dead. According to so some of the Wicca traditions, the black moon is also important. Wicca followers had two different ways of approaching the phenomenon: they either believed that it was the best time for spells and rituals, or the worst time to performs such acts.
Now that you have the scientific and traditional information on the black moon, it is up to you how to celebrate. Do you intend to witness the moonless night outdoors or try to prepare a powerful potion just one month before Halloween?
