Breast cancer is a terrible disease, which affects women all over the world. Treatment often implies surgery and chemotherapy, which are both painful processes. Moreover, they are expensive too, and although there are several variants, they all offer the same effectiveness, as a new study suggests.
A team of researchers investigated breast cancer treatments in the United States and observed that patients have several options to choose from. However, the methods vary in terms of costs, although none of them has effects which prevail over the results of the other.
The new study shows that there are wide price variations when it comes to breast cancer treatments. The difference between the treatments can even reach more than twenty thousand dollars. The specialists conducting the study observed that the situation is especially difficult for patients, who can’t afford the costs.
Doctors account for cases when patients wouldn’t undergo more tests. The reason was that they still had to pay tests and treatments they had started in the past. This was one of the cases with lead author Sharon Giordano, who started the study after such a conversation with one of their patients.
The high costs of breast cancer treatment often determine people not following them at all. Although the recovery process depends on them, patients decide not to sign up for one. They know that the prices will leave them with debts they will have to pay in the following years.
The researchers in charged of the new study analyzed the insurance situation of more than fourteen thousand breast cancer patients. They discovered that there were differences of no less than forty-six thousand dollars regarding a single medication type. In addition to this, they also found that cheap drugs were charged with high prices.
The ideal situation is that doctors and patients should discuss the type of treatment according to the insurance plan of the patient. They should go for the most convenient option, which is the less expensive for the patient. On the other hand, research takes time, and it is difficult to make such a decision.
After getting their tumors eradicated, it seems like cancer survivors face a lot of financial problems. The study shows that ten percent of the patients have to pay about ten thousand dollars for breast cancer treatments. The costs of the disease are among the most expensive in the health care field.
