A Bronx woman has been fatally stabbed and her baby was ripped from her womb, in a gruesome incident which occurred on Friday at 4450 Monticello Avenue, in the vicinity of West Fourth Street.
First responders arrived at the scene, located in the Wakefield section of Bronx, after someone called in order to report the crime at approximately 2:30p.m.
On the first floor of the building, they discovered a woman who was laying unconscious, after having been strangled and stabbed multiple times in the neck and stomach.
The victim, later identified as 22-year old Angelikque Sutton, appeared to have been around 8 and a half months pregnant, and there was also a newborn baby in another room.
According to Andy King, local New York City councilman, police investigators believe that the infant girl had been cut from the pregnant woman’s body.
The victim, who had sustained a cardiac arrest, was administered CPR before being rushed to Montefiore Medical Center, but upon her arrival at the hospital she was pronounced dead.
Law enforcement have apprehended a possible person of interest in this case: 22-year old Ashley Wade, who had also been present in the building and had claimed that the child belonged to her.
Despite her allegations, she refused to undertake a medical examination in order to prove that she was indeed the mother.
Currently, a search warrant is pending, so that the suspect can be examined, but police believe that it’s much more likely that Angelikque Sutton was the one who gave birth to the baby, immediately after the stabbing took place, at around 2:20 p.m.
It seems that the two women had known each other in school, and Sutton had recently earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice at St. John’s. Wade had reconnected with her, supposedly in order to rekindle their friendship, but the two got involved in a dispute.
It was Patrick Bradley, Sutton’s boyfriend, who found the culprit covered in blood and holding the baby girl, which prompted him to call 911 straight away.
One theory that police officers now have is that it might be a case of fetal abduction or baby snatching, whereby an unborn chid is kidnapped after a pregnant woman is killed. This version is supported by the fact that the infant appears to have been extracted via Cesarean section.
For now, the suspect is in police custody, and has been taken to Jacobi Medical Center to undergo psychiatric evaluation. It is expected that charges will be laid soon against her. According to officials, autopsy results obtained from the New York City Medical Examiner will shed new light in this case, and will soon be available.
The newborn child, who was named Genesis, is expected to make a full recovery, given that she appears to be just around one week premature, and is otherwise healthy.
Meanwhile, local residents have declared that they hadn’t heard any disturbance that afternoon. They only became aware that something terrible must’ve happened upon witnessing the arrival of police in their normally quiet and peaceful neighborhood.
