Remember the latest Call of Duty game, the one set in a distant future when Earth is fighting against Mars? We could say that we were a bit surprising when Activision announced that Call of Duty Infinite Warfare, the game released in November 2016, will feature full-fledged space battles, robots with a sense of humor, and a blood-thirsty Mars tyrant who threatened to wipe out humanity.
However, given the fact that previously-released Call of Duty titles suggested that the devs were keen on pushing the game’s timeline, it shouldn’t have been such as surprise. But, unlike Call of Duty Advanced Warfare, Infinite Warfare was pretty good. It was very nice to be able to fly around in your space fighter and engage in intense dogfights.
And now, the developers have announced that a new Call of Duty game is in the making and that it will probably be released sometime this year. Sadly, the developers did any details about the game’s plot and, more important, it’s setting.
What we do know for a fact is that Sledgehammer, Treyarch, and Activision wants to ditch the whole “future warfare” routine and to go back to its roots. Although we don’t know for certain what this means, some rumors floating around the Internet suggest that the new Call of Duty game might place the players in the shoes of a Marine serving during the Vietnam conflict.
Well, that’s not something entirely new, taking into account the fact that in the first Call of Duty Black Ops game you were able to sample some of the delights of the Vietnam theater. However, it’s one thing to serve in a war as a covert operative, and it’s something entirely different when you’re a jarhead.
So, how does the future of the Call of Duty franchise looks like? From what we can tell, the developers are looking for a way to make the franchise more appealing to players. Activision, Treyarch, and Sledgehammer declared that they don’t want their fans to see Call of Duty as that game which always recycles concepts.
Although the developers said that the new game might be released sometime this year, they wish to reward their fans with new DLCs for the critically-acclaimed Black Ops 3. Are we about to witness Call of Duty’s renaissance or will the studios follow the same time-honored recipe?
