Climate change is a concern not only for environmentalists, biologists and experts in conservation strategies. The military feels like the phenomena in our natural world is also a risk for the national security. Three documents debating this problem have been issued by former U.S. officers, who are now retired. They ask for a new approach to these environmental challenges.
The reports of the former officers are the “Climate Security Consensus Project Statement,” the “Climate and Security Advisory Group Briefing Book for a New Administration,” and the “Military Expert Panel Report: Sea Level Rise and the U.S. Military’s Mission.”
All these documents report on the interaction between climate change and the missions of the U.S. military. They can be affected by natural factors, and even lead to serious conflicts between countries, as the authors of the statement declared.
The Center for Climate and Security quoted from the statements earlier this week:
“There are few easy answers, but one thing is clear: the current trajectory of climatic change presents a strategically-significant risk to U.S. national security, and inaction is not a viable option.”
The solicitors asked for the formation of a special cabinet which should deal with climate change from a military point of view. One of their main points is that global warming and its related problems can affect areas in the world which stand as an interest for the United States. So if these regions are affected, it interferes with the United States’ affairs.
Increased sea levels stand as one of the many problems brought by global warming. Unexpected high tides flood the shores and endanger military operations and missions. Scientists believe that in less than fifty years, the phenomenon could happen even on a daily basis.
There are more than a dozen retired officers who took the initiative of presenting a report on the implications of climate change for the U.S.military. Although they haven’t come up with solutions so far, they are aware that the current situation must not last any longer. Their manifesto is a call to arms addressed to authorities.
The primary interests of the political campaigns are the economy, trade and policy. One of the candidates for president in the U.S., Donald Trump, declared that climate change is a Chinese invention meant to interfere with America’s business.
Nevertheless, climate change is a concern for both scientists and the U.S. military, who try to raise awareness of all the phenomena linked to global warming. They base their statements on facts and studies and intend to find a solution to slow the processes.
