Are you mentally prepared to descent, yet again, into Lovecraft’s maddening world? If so, then you, no doubt, are one of those people who expects the latest Call of Cthulhu title, developed Cyanide and published by Focus Home Interactive, the same company which delighted us with the Sherlock Holmes series.
Depths of Madness – The Ultimate Cthulhu Game?
No doubt, the subject of Lovecraft’s short story which bears the same title is familiar, since Cthulhu ceased, long ago, to be a part of Lovecraft’s mythology and an iconic figure in pop culture. Although there have been quite a lot of PC games featuring Lovecraft’s creation, it’s quite hard to tell which one of them really captured the feeling of dread, murkiness, and horror inspired by Cthulhu.
However, Cyanide’s upcoming title, slated for launch in Q4 2017, might be just the twist the industry needs. Called Call of Cthulhu The Official Video Game or the Depths of Madness, the new Lovecraftian game is a first-person perspective psychological horror-survival game developed for PS4, Windows PC, and Xbox.
According to Cyanide, the game is being developed using the powerful and eye-pleasing Unreal Engine 4 which means that, in terms of gameplay mechanics, the game should be eerily similar to Alien Isolation or Capcom’s Resident Evil 7 Biohazard.
From the company’s statement, we are led to believe that the upcoming title will also feature RPG elements and an open-world game style. Although many have begun comparing Cyanide’s title to Call of Cthulhu Dark Corners of the World, the game developed by Headfirst Productions and published by Bethesda Softworks, it would seem that Depths of Madness is more about puzzle-solving and stealthy approaches than shooting and running around like crazy.
Cyanide Still Insists on Honoring its Vow of Silence
To our great misfortune, the studio has kept quite regarding Depths of Madness, which means that all the info we have comes from the game’s launch trailer. As far as we know, the plot of the game revolves around Edward Pierce, a private investigator, who is sent to the murky Darkwater Island, somewhere near Boston, in order to investigate a cult’s activity.
However, from the moment sets foot on Darkwater Island, he will be assaulted by visions of horror lurking in the dark, about an unnamed fear that cripples the mind and numbs the soul. Pierce’s arrival sets a series of events in motion, culminating with the awakening of Cthulhu, the Ancient One. Will the game be as good as its teaser trailer? We should definitely stick around to see more.
