Health experts and governments have been telling people what to eat for years. Even if this might be a dangerous practice, they do it anyway. They are encouraging everyone to eat for their health and to leave aside the sugar, the carbonated drinks and the junk food. There are lots of countries from all over the world who, over the years, have come up with what they believe it’s the perfect list of healthy recommendations. However, a researcher from the Netherlands, Paul Behrens, came up with another idea in regards with this situation.
Could these pieces of advice on how we should eat also beneficially affect the environment we live in? It’s a delicate subject because producing food has brought the planet to the state it’s currently in. The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences has recently published his findings regarding this interesting subject.
By eating healthier you can help the planet
For starters, the researchers analyzed what would happen if people in 37 countries thoroughly followed these dietary recommendations. He came to the conclusion that the effects would mostly be beneficial for the planet. The emissions of greenhouse gas would decline, waterways would become less polluted because no fertilizer would exist, and the land required to feed those people would need to be smaller.
In order to came up with these results, the team of experts gathered database that allowed them to calculate all those environmental dangers and their effects. So, the first step was to calculate the impact the food we are eating today has on the planet. Then, they did the same thing but following the recommendations from those 37 governments.
What Behren discovered is amazing and could offer a glimpse into what might actually happen if we choose to follow these recommendations. We might even save the planet ourselves.
