SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has ambitious plans for humanity. He wants to make it possible that as many as 1 million people be transported to Mars, so that they build a thriving colony on the red planet.
It appears that Elon Musk is really intent on bringing us into the future with his marvelous inventions. He has brought to life electric cars and a home battery that can store the energy created by solar panels, but now his plans have reached epic proportions.
He wants to perfect his design for a spaceship that could carry as many as 100 people in one journey, which is an enormous increase considering that a spaceship is only able to accommodate 6 people at the moment.
And it doesn’t even stop here, because Elon Musk wants to create a space ship that can be reused. He finds this invention to be of the utmost importance, since it would reduce the costs of the future Mars missions enormously.
He compared it to an airplane and asked that people imagine if we actually had to build an entirely new plane for each and very single flight. The costs would obviously be increased by gigantic amounts.
Even if he somehow manages to turn this plan of gargantuan proportions into reality, that still leaves 100,000 transports of 100 people to be made. And that is a lot even if the spaceship is reusable.
The costs would be literally out of this world and would imply a large amount of zeros, as these 1 million people would be in need of a lot of supplies, ranging from oxygen to food and water. This would require a few hundred thousand transports extra for the supplies alone, that would add quite a few zeroes to the entire amount.
Elon Musk somehow sees this becoming possible by the end of the century though. He believes that 6 people cannot build a true colony on Mars. If we really want Mars to become a second home for earthlings, then he feels that we need at least 1 million people there, who can do all the work that will be required for turning the red planet into a more human-suitable environment.
It would probably be best if Musk could invent some sort of teleportation device, because somehow that doesn’t even sound all that farfetched any more for the SpaceX whiz.
It remains to be seen if Elon Musk will be able to complete his ambitious plans and take humanity all the way to Mars. Transporting 1 million people to the red planet will be a world-changing breakthrough.
