Ever wanted to take a stroll on the surface of Mars, just like Mark Whitney, the protagonist of ‘The Martian’? Well, you can now do just that, thanks to Fox Innovative lab and, of course, Ridley Scott.
The famous movie-maker recently joined forces with Fox Innovation Lab in order to create a spectacular VR experience based on the Award-winning movie featuring Matt Damon.
Technically speaking, ‘The Martian: VR Experience’ is not a game, but rather an immersive VR experience, where users could relieve Whitney’s adventures as he struggles to survive on the harsh surface of Mars.
Coining it an interactive adventure, Scott and Fox Labs want to prove that the Virtual Reality technology holds great potential and that it can go beyond the gaming industry. ‘The Martian: VR Experience’ is available for download on Steam, and it costs only $20.
However, although it is considered one of the cheapest VR experiences on the market, you’ll need a good gaming rig in order to play, and not to mention a VR headset. The game or tie-in can be played on PC or PS and is compatible with HTC Vive and PlayStation VR.
The ‘game’ also has its own YouTube trailer which gives us some clue on what to expect after installing it. Unfortunately, the trailer itself only shows just a couple of actions you will be able to perform during the VR experience such as opening pressurized doors, driving the heavy-duty Martian rover, excavating some stuff, and throwing rocks.
However, according to Scott’s statements, the players or viewer will be able to do a lot more than move around in the truck and tossing Martian rocks. The player, Ridley Scott declared, will also be able to maneuver in zero gravity and to experience many scenes from the iconic movie.
Now, if you’re interested in the game you can download it from Steam. The game accepts tracked motion controllers, and it also compatible.
Here are the minimum requirements for running ‘The Martian: VR Experience’:
- OS: Windows 8 or higher.
- RAM: 4 GB.
- Processor: Intel Core i5-4590 or higher.
- Video: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 or Radeon R9 290.
However, don’t expect the experience to be something mind-blowing. According to most reviews posted by users who bought the game, you’re looking at a game time of 20 minutes. Still, the game does manage to impress everyone thanks to its HQ graphics generated by the Unreal Engine 4.
