Probably an awful part of having to use a public toilet is thinking about that someone went in there before you. Naturally, our first instinct is to decorate the toilet seat with tons of TP to ensure that those pesky germs stay away. However, according to a new study from the University of Arizona, toilet paper is not only useless when it comes to stopping the infection, but the idea of covering the toilet with TP is unhygienic altogether.
It’s a common belief that public toilet seats can spread the germs responsible for conditions such as sexually transmitted infections or gastrointestinal issues. To this end, most of us would end up resorting to solutions like covering the whole seat in TP or standing in the most awkward positions.
However, a team of researchers from the University of Arizona has discovered that this habit is not only unhygienic but also dangerous for your health. According to Kelly Reynolds, the project’s leading scientists and public health researchers, despite common belief, the risk of contracting an STD or gastrointestinal infection after using a bare toilet seat is next to nothing.
Furthermore, according to Reynolds, it would appear that the risk of infection is greater when you flush the toilet than standing on the bare seat. Reynolds explained that when we flush the toilet, microscopic bits of fecal matter fly towards your end area.
The researcher said that these microscopic fecal pieces could contain harmful bacteria. Now, what about covering the toilet’s seat with TP? According to Reynolds and the team of researchers involved in this project, this habit is more harmful than just sitting on the toilet.
For the germs to invade your body, they need a space to multiply. Since people believe that toilet seats are a breathing ground for germs, they will cover them with toilet paper. As it happens, the germs have a wider spreading and breathing area when the toilet seat is covered with TP compared to bare ones.
So, the next time you find yourself far away from home and forced to use a public restroom, do keep in mind that it’s a good idea to bite the bullet and sit on the toilet that to decorate it with tiny bits of TP.
Another great piece of news is that the study also managed to prove that toilet seats are not infectious disease spreading environments.
