Many people were shocked to find out that a Japanese amusement park used 5,000 dead fish to decorate a unique ice skating rink.
The theme park is called Space World, and it is located in Kitakyushu. The park’s officials decided to come with a different approach and decorated the ice skating rink with many dead sea creatures and fish which appeared as if they had been trapped beneath the ice.
Although the rink was opened two weeks ago, the Space World officials had to close it after they received hundreds of complaints from visitors. The ice skating rink, called the “Aquarium of Ice,” was supposed to be a major attraction.
However, it had the opposite effect because even the regular park visitors stopped coming. Many people commented on social media, especially on Twitter and Facebook, saying that they were disappointed by the park’s lack of taste.
Also, most of them accused Space World of animal cruelty. Some former visitors say that skating on an ice surface having dead fish under it is a sign of insanity. After receiving so many complaints, the park’s officials apologized on their website and announced that they would close the ice skating rink immediately.
Space World officials also say that they value every opinion, especially the ones of the people that disregard animals’ participation in entertainment. According to Toshimi Takeda, Space World’s general manager, the park’s target was to help visitors experience ice skating at the next level. Also, the officials thought that people would have the opportunity to learn more about many species of fish.
After apologizing again, Takeda added that the park staff would melt the ice skating rink to remove the sea creatures. Furthermore, Space World will hold a memorial service in the following days.
Although various marine species, such as whale sharks, were introduced in the Aquarium of Ice, Space World declared that the shellfish, crabs, fish, and any other animals were bought from wholesale markets, so they were dead when the staff brought them to the park.
The dead animals will be donated to biologists who will use them as fertilizer. It is worth mentioning that some people enjoyed the new attraction saying that the ice skating rink was similar to a museum.
