Early Saturday, Jared McLemore was determined to get the attention of his ex-girlfriend, Alyssa Moore. He went on Facebook Live, poured kerosene on his body while streaming to an unknown number of viewers, and set himself on fire. He then ran into the crowded bar where Moore was working, causing extensive damage.
McLemore Died Due to His Severe Injuries
On Saturday, McLemore started streaming on Facebook Live while he doused himself in a highly-flammable liquid later identified as kerosene. He then set himself on fire and began running. That’s where the video – which was removed from the social media platform – ended.
According to witnesses, the 33-year-old was screaming and writhing in pain when he charged into the bar, his entire body covered in flames. Jim Duckworth, who had just finished performing on stage, rushed to the man, covering him with a blanket to put out the fire.
The victim was then transported to the hospital. Due to the extensive nature of his wounds, McLemore died at the Regional Medical Center.
He Was Targeting His Ex-Girlfriend
It seems the story of Alyssa Moore and Jared McLemore is riddled with domestic violence incidents. McLemore terrorized the woman to such an extent that she had to apply for a restraining order, which was active the day McLemore burst into Murphy’s – the bar where Moore worked as a sound engineer.
The woman stayed out of the spotlight, her bigger sister talking to the press on her behalf.
“We want to make clear that this happened because of a perfect storm of domestic abuse, the stigma around it, and the visceral reality of mental illness.”
A GoFundMe page was created the day following the tragic events to help Moore replace the equipment she lost during the incident and help her stay out of the spotlight until things settle down. The initial goal was set to $6,300, but Moore managed to receive over $34,000, vouching to use part of the money to help the community recover after this shocking and visceral loss.
