Man was found guilty for committing sadistic murder in 1995 as he thought the victim had raped his girlfriend.
Gianni Van, a man living in South California was convicted on Thursday for a first degree murder he committed in 1995.
The hideous murder had become famous internationally when one of the accomplices of the murder, Norma Esparza, a professor in Europe, got arrested in 2012. Van was found guilty for the killing of Gonzalo Ramirez who at the time was 24 years old and was living in Orange County.
Back then, Esparza and Van were dating and it appears that everything has started the moment when Esparza told Van, that Ramirez had raped her. According to reports from court, Esparza showed Van to Ramirez while they were in a bar and told him that was the man who forced her to have sex with him. Gianni Van gathered a group of friends who helped him to stage a car accident near the bar, kidnap and kill Ramirez on April 16, 1995.
The victim had a very violent death as he was chained, beaten and murdered brutally. He was hacked with a meat cleaver and his body was left in a dead end road from Irvine. The jury from Santa Ana found Van guilty of a first degree murder and could end up spending the rest of his life in prison.
In 1995 after the murder, Van was arrested , but the case was soon dropped as Van and Esparza had gotten married in the mean time and she used her spousal privileges right not to testify against her husband, reports from the Orange County Register have stated. In 2012 Esparza and Van were not longer husband and wife and after she got arrested , she seems to have changed her mind.
People siding Esparza, who is presently a known psychology professor, said that she should have been looked at as a victim of rape and not as a murder suspect. The woman pleaded guilty to the accusations of manslaughter and said yes to testifying against Van so she could receive a shorter sentence.
Esparza stated in front of the jury that at one point she and Val had taken a break from each other after which she met Ramirez in a bar from Santa Ana. The two spent some time together and he drove her back to her college, where allegedly he forced her to have sex her in her dorm room.
She went on saying that Van became extremely mad when he heard that she had been raped and claimed that he forced her join him and go show him the face of Ramirez in the bar where they had met. She said that she imagined that if she would identify Ramirez, Van only would confront him in public.
Esparza stated that she tried to convince his friends to back up from killing Ramirez. After many hours of testifying and confessing, she said that morally speaking she never felt guilty for the murder. She is facing to spend six years in prison and her sentence is expected in September.
The friends who participated and helped Van to kill Ramirez, Shannon Ray Gries of 44 years old will go to court for murder in July and Diane Tran of 46 years old pleaded guilty to the accusations of voluntary man slaughter and could be sentenced to maximum four years in prison.
