A recent study finds marijuana to have an important role in the healing process of fractures. With yet another medically relevant use, marijuana might earn a much more positive reputation in the future.
The study was conducted by the Tel Aviv University and published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research. The scientists studied the effects of the two active compounds present in marijuana, cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol THC on laboratory rats with femur fractures. While CBD has no psychoactive effects on the recipient, THC is the active substance responsible for the renowned effects on the mood and overall psychological state.
In the first part of the experiment, a group of rats were administered the CBD alone and the scientists closely monitored the healing process of their fractures. In an 8-week period, the results were remarkable.
As part of the second phase of the experiment, another group of rats were administered both the CBD and the THC, and to the scientists’ surprise, the results were extremely similar. Thus, the researchers deduced that the significant effects on the fracture healing process are to be attributed to the CBD.
“We found that CBD alone makes bones stronger during healing, enhancing the maturation of the collagenous matrix, which provides the basis for new mineralization of bone tissue,” said Dr. Yankel Gabet, one of the lead authors of the study.
The doctor added that upon being treated with the CBD, the bone becomes much harder and will maintain this enhanced resistance in the future.
Also, the Tel Aviv researchers pointed out that the human body is prepped to process cannabinoids, and therefore it responds excellently to these substances, even to the natural cannabinoid components in the plants. These have an abundance of effects on the human body, ranging from the psychoactive ones to specific tissue targets, such as those on the bones.
Therefore, the sooner the drug stigma that is placed on cannabis is dismissed, the better it could be studied in the future, as bigger and better effects of the compounds keep resurfacing in the scientific world. Among other significant medical uses for marijuana is its calming effects on people suffering from epileptic seizures, that might help prevent these episodes.
Marijuana has also been linked to the treatment of several other diseases, ranging from HIV/AIDS, to Alzheimer’s. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance that more extensive research is performed on the properties of this amazing plant.
