A new report from Mental Health America shows that not all patients in the United States receive their individual mental health treatment. The statistics point out that over half of them are not adequately treated, and here is where medical care services fall short. The situation applies to both adults and teenagers, as the rates of mentally ill patients are increasing.
According to the recent report, twenty percent of the adult population of the United States needs mental health treatment. Unfortunately, only half of them receive it. As far as young people are concerned, more and more depression cases are reported. Official statistics show that less than twenty percent of them receive special medical care, which means that the significant part of eighty percent is left to deal with the condition on their own.
Officials are aware of the situation and try to make it right. They intend to focus on early diagnosis and prevention. They also plan to take action about the workforce in the field and provide people with easier access to medical care services.
The new report from Mental Health America investigated into the situation of all fifty states, plus the District of Columbia. They found out that most of the difficulties were encountered by residents of the Southern Parts of the country. Alabama, Mississippi, and Arkansas are among the states which got the lowest scores for mental health treatment goals.
With regions that can’t afford proper mental health treatment for patients, there is a common and easy measure, namely imprisonment. People are simply secluded from society, confined to rooms and kept in there to deal with their own problems. More than fifty-seven thousand mentally ill patients receive this kind of treatment in the South.
The new report was also concerned with the age distribution of patients. It seems like the states with most mentally ill teenagers are Arizona, Arkansas, and Oregon. On the contrary, Minnesota, Connecticut and South Dakota scored the highest for healthy and well-treated teenagers.
The report from Mental Health America shows which are the best states where specialized mental care treatment is assigned to patients. These states are Connecticut, Vermont, and Massachusetts. However, there are also states which improved their rank in this top. For instance, New Mexico was on the forty-fourth position in the top, and now it ranks twenty-two, ahead of Florida, which is on the twenty-eighth position. Similarly, Oklahoma used to be on the forty-first position, and this year it ranked twenty-four.
